Spadaro

Post by Lisa1566 »

I am looking for my husbands grandfather. His name was GENNARO SPADARO. He was born in 1882 in Corigliano Calabra? Not sure if that is the right spelling. I've tried to find him on Ellis Island with no luck. I did however find my husbands grandmother who became Gennaro's wife. Her name was CONCETTA MASUCCI. She came over in 1903. Supposedly Gennaro came before her. They lived in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. Any information would be wonderful. Lisa

Hi Lisa. Welcome to the forum.

Possible 1930 census for Gennaro Spadaro and family (misindexed as Gandara). Might provide some clues.

That is the family. I'm not sure about the Gandara name. I can see on the 1930 census it is spelled Spadaro. I am so excited! It answered a few questions I had. Gennarw would have been 5 years old when he came over here. Now to find out what his parents names were and where they lived when they arrived. I'm not sure why I can't find them on Ellis Island if they came over as a family, any clue?? Thank you so very much of this. It means so very much to me. Lisa

Where did you find those census records? I've had no luck looking on those sites of the census. How can I view other records of those years 1920 and 1930 for the Canonsburg area? Thanks, Lisa

Lisa,

I located the census records on Ancestry.com. To view other records for Canonsburg, do a search for the misindexed names. When each record opens and you view the original image, you can toggle forward or backward. Thanks to suanj, you now know the marriage date for Concetta and Gennaro which will prove helpful.

These are just some reasons why you can't find them on Ellis Island.

1. At that time they would have come through Castle Garden, not Ellis Island

2. Wife probably traveled with children after husband's arrival. She would have used her maiden name. The children may be listed under her name, not their father's. Do you know mother's maiden name?

3. Name is so mangled, you can't connect it with correct name or manifest is misplaced.

4. They did not come into NY.( Could have been Boston, Philly, or Baltimore)

Yes, that is the same family. I can't tell you how much all of this means to us. All of you have been such a huge help. I will probably have to use my library to find information on ancestry.com. I do not have a subscription to that site. Thank you all so very much Lisa :D

Hey Lisa!
Could this explain why some of the children
were born in NY?
Same birth date as suanj’s :D 1942 Draft Card
Was it possible that Gennaro or Concetta had
family in Rochester?
Valarie

1918 WWI Draft Registration Card
Gennaro Spadaro 36
166 Atkinson, Rochester Monroe NY
Born 15 Aug 1882
Naturalized
Street car conductor for NY State
Nearest realtive: Concetta at same address

WOW, all of you are truly amazing. I am new to all this "digging". The places that you find all this info, is it paid sites? Anyway, out of all this info and documents, it's strange how Gennaro parents aren't mentioned. I even have his birth certificate, all in Italian, but I can't make out any mention of parents. But thank you once again for all of this wonderful information. Lisa

Hi Lisa!
Yes most of this information is from paid sites, primarily
ancestry.com
But, there are tons of free :D sites out there!

Once the family is located with census and military
records from ancestry, ordering vital records from
the area is generally the next step.

I often review a couple of resources whenever I
get stuck:

about.com
inclues a list of free sources
and Cyndi's list
