City/Town in Italy??

Post by kmaldo »

I'm wondering if anyone here knows of a particular locale in Italy. I recently obtained my great-grandfather's naturalization papers from NARA and on them it says he was born in Rome.

However, when doing some checking on ancestry.com, I found his WWII registration card and on it he wrote that he was born in Calli (or perhaps Colli?) Italy. I'm certain this is his record.

I tried searching Calli/Colli on Google and couldn't find anything. Could this perhaps be a suburb or section of Rome?? I will need to obtain his birth certificate as I am pursuing Italian citizenship and am now confused since I'll have to obtain it from the correct comune.

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!

I live in Rome ad I am not aware of any Calli/Colli suburb or section in Rome.
Could you post the WWII registration card, so that we can better see what he wrote down?

There is a town in Lazio named Colli sul Velino and a town in Isernia named Colli a Volturno (known as Colli prior to unification). Each of these towns is located within a reasonable distance of Rome. What was your GGF's name? Sometimes a surname can be traced to a particular town.

My great grandfather's name was Biagio Tomassi (though I always thought he went by Tomasi). DOB per the immigration papers 4/29/1892, in Rome.

I identified more discrepancies on ancestry.com, they show his DOB as 1/25/1892 with last name Tomasi, per the Social Security death index.

Unfortunately I think this is a common enough surname and probably cannot be traced to a particular location.

I tried attaching the WWII registration card but I am getting an upload error and I don't know why...any suggestions?

Thank you!!

Neither a PagineBianche search nor an ItalyWorldClub surname search return any results for Tomasi in Colli sul Velino and/or Colli a Volturno. As you say, it is a widely disbursed surname and isn't indigenous to any particular area. Oh well, a shot in the dark that missed.

This appears to be the correct card.
Do you have his ship's manifest?

You truly are a "Master," vj! The documents you posted are the very ones NARA sent to me.

I'm 100% positive these are my great-grandfather's. The children's names are those of my grandmother and her siblings, and they lived in Revere, MA.

I don't know why there are so many discrepancies with names, dates/locations of birth, but at least this is a starting point.

Thank you very much for your time and efforts.

If you're talking about discrepancies in
US records, they're very common!

Colli is a frazione of Monte San Giovanni Campano. The Registri dello Stato Civile, 1871-1898, of that comune has been filmed by the LDS. The good news is that your GGF's birth record should be among the filmed records. The bad news is that only 28 years have been filmed.

A PagineBianche search for Monte San Giovanni Campano returns eight results for the surname Tomassi, five of which are for the frazione of Colli.

John, thank you very much for delving into this even further - I really appreciate it. I will contact the comune in Monte San Giovanni Campano to see if they can obtain my GGF's birth records.

Hi, cousin! Don't know if you even look at this board any more but I happened to come across it today for the first time.

My dad was Ed Tomasi, born 1931. Technically, "Tomassi" but Dad told me his generation changed the spelling because they "didn't like the 'ass' in the middle of the name." Well, that was his story, anyway!
