HI, and welcome to the forum.

Do you have the Ellis Island manifests for these people? If so, that is the best place to start. Can you post that information? If not, we can search it for you. I know you are looking for info from Italy, but first you need the actual town of birth which is often on the manifests.

Thanks biff

Amazing work!

Basically I am trying to gain my italian citizenship while finding out more about my italian family. I've written to the naturalization records of new york about Louis Nani, seeing as he is my closest relative who was born in Italy. They said they had no record of him but he some how has a S.S Card. Does that mean he must have become a citizen or did he obtain it as a registered alien?

Thanks again!

You can request Louis Nani's SS-5, his application for social security number. The SS-5 will give his parents' names, Louis's date & place of birth.
https://s044a90.ssa.gov/apps7/efoiassa/ ... SSA711.jsp

There could be more than one Louis Nani, don't forget! As I understand it, people were eligible for SS if they were US citizens, either by birth or naturalization. I do not know if someone could obtain it as a registered alien. Was Louis a registered alien?

Also try ancestry.com--for naturalization information.

Good luck, Peg

Yes, someone could still apply for a SSN even if they were not naturalized. My great grandfather was a registered alien for over 35 years and he also had one. So don't give up hope. Go ahead and request the application.

Also, try footnote.com for naturalization info. They may have it, even if you can't locate it using ancestry.

Where is Stanley Di Tomaso from in Italy? I ask because I have some distant relatives with a similar surname. Mine are from Stazzema and vicinity. Peg
