Help with the Diorio name.

Post by Giovanni777 »

I am trying very hard to find out my family's history in Italia.

My Grandfather, Vincent Diorio, was either born in NYC or Italia. He went back and forth. He also fought in WWI for the Italian army. He came back to the US (Bronx), married Teresa Demarinis, and had my father, Carmine Enrico Diorio, on July 10th, 1926.

Vincent's father was Carmine Giuseppe Angelo Diorio, and I think he could have been from either Salerno or Campobosso, but I could be wrong. He married Teresa Generazzo (or Generazza).

My Grandfather, Vincent Diorio was born on 1/1/1899, and died on 8/13/1961, according to his death certificate, issued in NYC.

I can't find anything at ALL online.

Can anyone help?

Tanti Grazie,

~Giovanni

My Grandfather, Vincent Diorio, was either born in NYC or Italia

Hello Giovanni & welcome to the Forum!

From ancestry.com
New York City Births, 1891-1902
Births Reported in 1899.
Borough of Manhattan.
Vincenzo Diorio
01 Jan 1899
Cert #6472

For Italian records, you'll need the family's
exact town(s) of origin.
Do you have Carmine's ship manifest?

Thank you! I do not have any ship manifest. It has been so hard to find out what town Carmine came from! The ship manifest usually says this, no?

I did find this, and wasn't sure, because it appears that he wasn't in the US for long... My father didn't even know his grandparents. I believe both Carmine Giuseppe Angelo Diorio and his wife, Teresa (maiden name Generazzo or Generazza) lived their lives out in Italia.

Well, he must have stayed along to have Vincenzo, right? So there should be a 1900 census for him unless he left the country when Vincenzo was only a year old.

the exact surname spell is DI IORIO changed in DIORIO in the USA... I believe that your Carmine perhaps came from Campobasso area...
this is a :

The manifest prior to 1906 doesn't refer to the town of origin in most cases. Only to the country of origin. If Vincent came to the US, good chance there is a passenger record for him. And he may have revisited Italy later on in life as well...giving a clue to where.

Vincent may have had a passport...might be worth looking for this as well.

These are specific towns where immigrants with the name D'Iorio originated. These are just suggestions, as he may have come from elsewhere.

Name Town Province Region Postal Code
D'Iorio Pietracupa Campobasso (CB) Molise 86020
D'Iorio Acerra Napoli (NA) Campania 80011
D'Iorio Galluccio Caserta (CE) Campania 81044

Do you know of any other brothers or sisters?

Look for an obituary for him...might reveal friends or other relatives that lived in Italy or came from the same area.

It is difficult to tell whether this is him or not, as we were always told that the name was always "Diorio", and there are a significant amount of "Diorio"s in Italia. However, it is easy to get a misspelled name from the Ellis Island experience. I still need to find the 1900 census info.

...about the census...

If Carmine Giuseppe Angelo Diorio was never a US citizen, why would he in the US census?

It doesn't matter if you naturalized or not. You are required to be enumerated in a country if you are living there at the time the Census is done. Its no different than today.

OK. A Gi Capi.

Now I just have 2 figure out how to search the 1900 database, if there is one. I have been so discouraged, because it seems like all of these private companies collect the data, then want people to pay for everything. It should be illegal. I would pay for these sites, if i could be sure to find something, but many don't let you know until you sign up.

Also, I searched through the "ellisisland.org" site for passenger names, and came up with nothing... niente.

: (

I will not stop though, until I find out more. I will hire someone if I have to.

Ciao, Bella.

Don't pay for anyone else until you get the basics down.

In Ripabottoni, the name is Di Iorio. In the records, it reads Iorio (di). Eventually it lead to the spelling of "Di Iorio". Many times with the vowel begining the name of Iorio, the spelling would be D'Iorio. In the US, people left out the apostrophe and it became Diorio.

Anyway, based on the spelling of Di Iorio, there are lots of cities in ITaly with that surname in the 1900's.

You must look for variations of the name in the census. Not just Diorio, but D'Iorio, Di Iorio, and even DiIorio....as well as others.

The problem is not knowing the name Vincent's father went by...CArmine, Giuseppe, Joseph, Angelo, etc. This is where tracking down an actual copy of the birth record will help. It will give the name of the parents and the probable address where he was born. It will lead to info in the census...unless they returned to Italy before 1900..........

Again, start with Vincent. Look for his birth record, his obituary might list where his parents came from, look for his social security application...might tell more, look for a passport. Contact all the relatives and see if anyone can give you more info. Usually the oldest child's oldest child will have the family pictures or documents, etc..... See if anyone has anything that will help. If someone save the register from his funeral...often will list people he knew, some of whom came from the same town of origin.

You would have to gather this for a professional to start looking so do it now for yourself...and you might be surprised what you will find.

Grazie, "essgee".

I am starting to believe that there is no record on Ellis Island.org, and I am now wondering if they came over before 1892, when Ellis Island records begin.

Is there any other database of passengers before Ellis Island?

Also... I still can't find a searchable census of 1900.

HELP!
