Caputo

Post by ldineen »

I am trying to find any information on my great grandmother Anna Carolina Caputo. I believe she came from Caccuri, and she married my grandfather in Boomer, Wv. She died young, there. Her brother lived in Red Star, wv but I don't know is name. I think he returned to Italy.

Hi ldineen

Do you know what year your great grandmother came to the US? Her age when she came, the year she and your great grandfather got married or how old she was when she married?

The more detail you can give, the easier it will be for people on the forum to help.

Regards,
Elizabeth

Unfortunately, That is all I know.

But, after my great grandfather died from black lung, she had a nervous breakdown after being left with 5 kids by herself. She was taken to a sanatarium near Boomer, WV, where she later died. shouldn't there be some sort of record about her death?

I checked with the Catholic church in Boomer where all her kids were baptized and where she was married, but their records say nothing about either of my great grandparents death. I guess I can't look at the SS# index can I, they prob. didn't have SS#??

I cannot express how thankful I am for all of your help! How in the world are you finding this information? Is there a website where I can search these censuses in WV? How did you find this death certificate?

The census has to be them. The only thing is, the names of the last 2 children seem to be off. But the Americans were so bad about changing the Italian names. I see where in the 1920 Census they call them FARBER, that is what my grandmother's name was changed to in the orphanage. So, that was definitely supposed to be Falbo.

My grandfather did marry Anna Carolina Caputo, so that seems correct buy it was in 1908.

Their first child was Mary, that is right she born in 1909 so the 1920 census is close

Ralph was the second child, so RULF was probably him he was born in 1911 so the 1920 census is close

the next child was my grandma Rosina so that is right and she was born in 1914 so again that is close

but the next child was Alexander I'm not sure what that is they wrote he was born in 1916 so again, that census seems right

the next child was "Elizabeth" in Italian my grandma thinks is was Alexantrina or Alexandria don't know her DOB

The last child not on the censun was Salvatore. He was born in 1920 the year of the census, that is why he is not on it. So, this must be correct!!!

I don't know if you have seen these sites, but they give you some information about Spencer State Hospital, which was more than a mental institution. Anna could hve been there because of the tuberculosis.

Yes, I just found that out this morning. My grandmother had always said that she had a nervous breakdown. But, when I told her about the death certficate, she said that she did die of TB. We didn't know until today that Spencer wasn't just a mental hospital. I will look at those websites. I found that Lakin Hospital has all of the records and I am going to try and find hers. Thank you for your help!

How in the world are you finding this information?
Is there a website where I can search these censuses in WV?
How did you find this death certificate?
Quite a few of us have a subscription to ancestry.com
Your local library may offer access to the 'Library' version of
ancestry.com
Ancestry.com does have free access to the 1880 census images
and you can use them to build your family tree online.

HeritageQuest also has census records thru 1920 & partial 1930.
Some libraries offer free home access to HeritageQuest with a
library card.

The New York ship manifests from 1892 thru 1924 are also
online thru Ellis Island
one step search engine
Earlier transcriptions for New York are also on Castle Garden
(also useful for looking for alternate name spellings
thru abt 1904)

West Virginia is one of a few states that have original Vital Records on line.
WV Records Site

Thanks for the feedback, we’re so glad we could help.

No doubt there were more Caputo’s headed to
WV.
Anna Carolina Caputo is not easy to find so far.
For consideration:

Not the Correct Manifest
1907 manifest
page 2
special inquiry page
16 Aug 1907 SS Principe Di Piemonte Naples to NY
Line 18
(may be traveling with lines 19 & 20)
Clarice Caputo 20 (abt 1887)
- single
- last residence San Giovanni in Fiore Cosenza
- in San Giovanni, father Domenico
- destination Fairmont (Marion County) WV
- joining brother-in-law Giuseppe? Ruggiero?
- born in San Giovanni in Fiore Cosenza

May only be a coincidence that the Agostino Falbo
manifest that suanj :D found, had him also headed
to Marion County (town Monongah)

I know she is very hard to find. But thank you for helping.

This manifest is not her because her parents names are wrong.

Her parents names were Guiseppe Caputo and Chirubina Ollevote (sp?)

Yes, that is my grandmother (Rose Falbo "farber") and her brothers and sisters. Thank you.

The death cert. above is also correct, that is for sure, my grandmother Rose's mother, Anna Carolina Caputo.
