Surname Amatrudo from Maiori Italy

Post by DeeKay619 »

I know that my grandfather came to the US on a ship called the Canada to Ellis Island in May of 1913. He was 18 at the time and his name was Gaetano Amatrudo. On the manifest, it states that he came from the town of Maiori. He lived in Philadelphia until his death.

If anyone knows of this family, I would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Above is a link to the Italian white pages, you can search for your surname and the town and perhaps find potential relatives.

Then you can write letters to them, one helpful site is:

Good luck!

Hmmm.... the Gaetano Amatrudo that came into Ellis Island in 1913 (at age 17) was heading up to New Haven CT as his final destination...

I do find a Gaetano Amatrudo in Philadelphia, but he was born Jan 21st, 1882 (per SSDI & draft regs) and died in Phila on Dec 15, 1966 (per SSDI)... He worked for the Phila Navy Ship Yard (per both 1918 WWI and 1942 WWII draft registrations in Phila)... Seems this Gaetano was born in Bontoro, Italy (per WWII reg).... 1930 census has the following family members in his household:

Giatano Amatrudo 48 (immigrated in 1905)
Immacuata Amatrudo 41 (immigrated in 1899)
(they were married around 1907)
Andrew Amatrudo 21
Rachael Amatrudo 19
Joseph Amatrudo 15
Anna Amatrudo 6
Raymond Amatrudo 3 10/12
Rita Amatrudo 1 5/12

I mention all this to make sure you're not mixing information from two persons with the same name... which is easily done...

Let me know if any of the above rings a bell...

By the way, if the above Gaetano is yours.... starting in 1904 Philadelphia added mothers maiden name to the birth certificate.... so finding a cert for any of the children could help you figure out Immacuata's maiden name...
