Hi Chris

"lista di leva " is the italian army enlistment to conscript (sigh!) new recruits when it was obligatory if you was 18. In Italy is not obligatory (compulsory) from 1993-1994...

regards.
Vincenzo.
I'm searching lost relatives and descendant of my greatgrandfather Vincenzo Genualdi (or Gennaldi or Genuardi) and my greatgrandmother Concetta Davola (their sons: Angela, Carmela, Antonio, Bartolomeo, Ernesto, Simone, Riccardo, Maria) went in Chicago,Ill., and New Orleans, in 1880-1920 from Sicily. Other family related : Jacobucci or Jacopucci (from Central Italy).

Chris, you may be able to get a copy of these records if you write to the state archives for the province that your relative is from.

The Lista di Leva is actually a list of eligible young men compiled from the local anagrafe office. This is different from the records held by the State Archives of the military records of those who actually served. Some State archives also have the Lista di Leva, but many are still conserved in the local town archives (at least where I live).
Men were often exempted if they were married, sustainer of the family or medically unfit. The Lista di Leva often gives this information.

I was able to get the records from the archives in Reggio Calabria and Benevento of two relatives who did not serve, so it is worth a try to ask.
