instasi, instasi, anastasi

Post by binstasi »

I have been searching for my husband's grandparents, Antonio Anastasi and Josephine Fosterier both born in Italy. His father, Nicholas, left his wife about 1936 and changed his last name he used with her from Instasi to Instase, which is on his naturalization papers. I have a copy of his naturaliztion papers and also his orginal discharge from the Army in 1920. Is there anyone that may be related to this family?

Hello and Welcome!!

Are you looking for US or Italian records?

Anything you can relate about your husband's grandparents and children will help us help you locate records.

Did his grandparents emigrate to the US? If so, do you know when and where? Do you have birthplaces, birthyears for his grandparents, father and siblings?

Since his father served in the army, I'm guessing he was born around 1900. Do you know if he received his naturalization via the army?

Hello and thank you for trying to help me. First let me answer your questions in the order you asked them. We are unsure whether his grandparents came to the states. We have various birth dates on his father, 17 Mar 1888 and also 27 Oct 1898 which was on his petition for naturalization paper. We were told his father had a brother who everyone called him Chris Anastasi. His marriage record stated that he was 21 on 25 Nov 1920 and he stated his parents names were Antonio Instasi and Josephine Forestiera and his wife was Louisa Iarrobino, and her parents were Nicolo Iarrobino and Rose Loguerco. We have no dates for the parents of each.
On his discharge from the army, he served 1918 to 1921, they had his name as Instasi but his naturalization papers state INSTASE. That is why we are having such a hard time and also with the name change. To us, the time he served in the army doesn't really exist since he was naturalized Instase and not the "i" on the end.
He was naturalized while in the army, stationed at Fort Strong, MA.
So, now where do I search for the name? We have sent to Italy for a birth record but it may come back like the one we have may not be the right one.

Again, thank everyone willing to assist us.

We have that census and they had a total of 9 children. His petiotion stated that he came here in 1915. All the different papers we have, all have different dates for his birth and also for his immigration.

Barbara,

I haven't had any luck finding any possible Massachusetts census records for Anthony (Antonio) Anastasi and Josephine (Giuseppa or Giuseppina) Fosterier (possibly Forestieri?) nor any immigration records.

Have you located Nicola's ship manifest yet? What birthdate and place of birth does he state on his naturalization records?

Birth date on his naturalization paper is 27 Oct 1898. On the copy of his birth record from Italy in 1961, it says his birth date is 18 Mar 1888.

I have a passport application on a Antonio Anastasi and it has his birth date as 17 Mar 1888. I am in doubt if this is a relative of his or not.

I also have a NY passenger list for a Nicolo Anastasi coming here on 9 June 1906 at the age of 18 but do not know if this is him or not. I have a copy of the ship SS Cretic on the 17th August 1915 has a Nicolo Anastasi, but Forestiera was marked through and th eAnastasi nome was writen in. It seems that he traveled with his mother, Guiseppa Forestiera, to the port of Boston.

Page 2

Giuseppa Forestiera, age 37
Nicolo Anastasi, son, age 14
Pasqua Anastasi, daughter, age 7
Natale Anastasi, son, age 4 Natale is CHRIStmas in Italian
Last residence and place of birth for all: Rometta, Messina
Nearest relative in Italy: father/grandfather Natale in Rometta
Destination: Waltham MA to join husband/father Antonino (A)Nastasi at 344 Warren Street
Naturalization notations for Pasqua and Natale

Pretty strong evidence that this is the correct manifest.

Possible 1930 census for Antonio Anastasi and family
http://img385.imageshack.us/img385/33/z ... 930gz9.jpg

Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts
109 Gardner
Antonio Anastatia, head, age 64, widowed, immigration year 1914, laborer rubber factory
Cristy Anastatia, son, age 20, immigration year 1915
Lena Anastatia, daughter, age 18, immigration year 1915

This census looks correct but I cannot explain the information for Lena. Is this Pasqua/Ester from the 1915 manifest and 1920 census with an incorrect age? What happened to daughter Annie from 1920 census? Did she pass away as a young child?

Perhaps the naturalization documents for Pasqua and Natale referenced on the 1915 ship manifest hold some clues.
