Ferla, from Sortino, Siracusa, Sicily c 1850

Post by lizferla »

My Great Grandparents, Sebastiano Ferla and Maria Lo Manaco lived in Sortino. Sebastiano died before 1906 (I think!) but Maria still lived there in 1927.
They had 4 sons (Guiseppe c1870, Gaetano 1874, Paolo 1875 who moved to Scotland in 1900, and Salvatore 1883 my Grandfather) and 4 daughters (Vencenzina 1873, Clemintina1886, Vincenzina 1890, and Viginia 1890, who emigrated to USA from Scotland in 1914).
All the children were born in Sortino, and all moved to Glasgow Scotland about 1900.
Any ideas on were to start the research???????
All ideas welcome, thanks in advance, Liz Ferla

This is the manifest for Virginia Ferla (line 8)
Page 1 and Page 2

According to the manifest, she had a brother in Glasgow named Frank.

Thanks Livio!
Had already traced the Ellis Island site.
After arriving in NY, she disappears!
She is not on the 1920 census, I have contacted numerous states in the US thinking she must have married before 1920, but they cannot trace her, but return most of my cheques!!!!! Still 2 results to come back.
Did think she may have returned to Glasgow, but her brother Poalo became a British subject (I have all the papres) and he states he has a sister in US in 1927, so that must be her. Never did trace this brother Frank though, he hasnt shown up anywhere except on the Ellis Island papers.
Only Ferla was Poalo who came to Scotland 1900, and shows in the 1901 census. Have to wait for the 1911 census to find the others!!!!!!!!
Did they have a census in Italy? Just a thought.
Thank you for trying to help though.
Pretty new at this and its still an obsession at the moment. Hit many more brick walls and I may just forget it all!
Cheers, and Thanks,
Liz Ferla
All advice welcome!

I have been told this relates to her applying and being granted citizenship.
Numbers relate to area she was granted it in.
Have tried to follow this up, but it must be an age thing! Just cant get my head around it. Have emailed various cities and record offices, but so far drawn a blank!
She was married by then, and I cant trace her new surname.
Its not easy this game, is it????????
Thank you all for your advice though, appreciate it.

Will keep you posted on the results of the search for Virginia.
Now, how about some suggestions re Sebastiano Ferla and Maria LoMonaco c1850 from Sortino? Any suggestions who to contact to trace them, siblings, children etc?

Have you consulted microfilmed records by the LDS?
Sortino has been filmed, records date from 1820 - 1929.

Now in case your Italian language skills are somewhat lacking,
as are mine... , here are some simple guidelines to use when deciphering the records:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... Italia.ASP

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/search/ ... LLatin.ASP

http://www.bertotti.it/genealogia/modul ... =21&page=1

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice, Wldspirit!
Turns out there is a recourse centre about 2 minutes from my house!
Will make an appointment to go round, see if they can help.
Again, thanks

Your most welcome.... :)

If you have any problems with the film, just post. We have many members here who are more than experienced at translating the documents. Alot of our members are now transcribing films from their town of origin and placing them on the internet for others to use....
a huge undertaking for which I commend them!!

Sounds lovely, excuse the ignorance, but can you translate? Thank you.
Thanks also for your help and advice. Made an appointment to check the records at the local all saints church.
And a special thanks to all the people who are translating the information for others to use xxx

Posted on the Emigration forum not knowing there was a thread here:
The second page at Ellis says she was going to her uncle Vincenzo Ceuverino, or Ceuaerino, not really sure of the last name at 1515 S. E (?) Pittsburg (should be Pittsburgh) PA. HeritageQuest Census does not allow for wildcards so I could not just search for names beginning with Ceu-

Her uncle must have married one of her mother's sisters; when did she get to Pittsburgh. Might search Ellis under the maiden name and husband's name might be on same manifest.

If we can find out the uncle's surname and check census and other databases in Pittsburgh, we might find Virginia. Might have gotten married there. Note that the age is different (24) so she would have been 30 in 1920. The City of Pittsburgh site doesn't have a records section. Have to check the Allegany County site.

In Sicily, will check if any Ferlas with first names of grandparents, as they usually pass them on.
Ferro (from Ferri), Capriotti(TE); De(i)Marzio, Nervina(o), Colucci, Gatto, Testa(CB); Basile(BA) ; Bianchi(AQ); Augello, Bissi, Iacono(AG); Pisano(), Impaglia () Friends looking also: Vivenzio (SA); LoPiccolo(PA)-seems to be Lopicolo originally
