Biff,
Thank you for all your help. Because of the information you gave me I was able to find a post about Giachino Guarino written by (it ended up) the son of my granfather's first cousin. I contacted him but was doubtful, at first, that we were related because his grandmother's name was Rose and I had no record of her. We passed back what we knew and figured it out. Here is some info he gave me...
Gioachino Guarino married Rosalia Benedetta Costanza on 28 Oct 1887 in Alia, Palermo, Sicily. She was 22 and born in Alia.
Gioachino Guarino married Giuseppa Mancuso, b. 23 Oct 1878, Alia, Palermo, Sicily, d. 5 Feb 1934, Chicago, Cook, IL, daughter of Giuseppe Mancuso and Agata Falcone, Marriage date/place unknown. Her birth date is listed as 29 Jan 1890 on her death certificate. There is some doubt as to correct information.
Gioachino Gaetano Guarino, b. 29 Sept 1860 at 8 PM to Gaetano Guarino, villager, age 35, and Antonina Panepinto, age 35, both residents of Alia, Palermo, Sicily. He was baptized and registered 30 Sept 1860. Stato Civile record # 151.
I am trying to figure out if Rose came to the USA or died in Italy and also, when he married Giuseppa.
Again, thank you for your time/help.

Re: Guarino
HI Debby,
Thanks for posting your followup. What we guessed is correct. Giuseppa was Giacchino's second wife. The date of birth on her death certificate is incorrect based on the census information previously posted.
1900 census
Giuseppa
---born Oct 1878 (matches the information you posted)
---married 4 years, marriage year about 1896
---5 children, 3 living. I'm sure this refers to the number of children Giacchino had with both wives. Son Gaetano with Rosalia Costanza and daughters Mary and Lillie with Giuseppa Mancuso.
1930 census
Giuseppa
---age 52, year of birth about 1878
---age at first marriage 17 which makes marriage year about 1895. Since they were in Louisiana in 1900, the marriage likely took place in Louisiana, town and parish unknown.
I'll take a look to see if I can find a manifest for his first wife Rosalia but she may have remained in Italy and passed away there.
Should you want to check the records for Alia to trace your ancestors further, you can order census, church, and civil registration records for Alia from a Family History Center. The relative you contacted gave you a lot of solid information to begin your search.

Re: Guarino
The ages all work out in those manifests. Must be them. You are wonderful!!
I have gone through my grandma's house and found some very interesting papers. She has the passport of Serafina Balzante (my great-great grandma). She did not even know she had it (and before your help couldn't remember her name). I was so excited when I found the passport as we now have a picture of her. Because of your help, and seeing how her name was spelled, I was able to email the Archdiocese of Chicago and find out where her gravesite is, which I plan to visit soon. For that, again I thank you.
I was also able to find out Serafina's husband's name is Antonino, which I assumed because my grandfather's name is Anthony. Glad to have it in writing, though.
Below are links to her passport. Since you put in so much time and effort for me (and my family) I thought you might like to see this. Her father's name is Michele, but I cannot make out her mother's name (that would be her mother's name, right??)

Re: Guarino
Haven't been here because of illness, but wanted to say what a wonderful job you have done, Biff. Truly first rate, as usual.
Debby, I am so glad that you connected with a cousin. Yuo have learned so much in the past week+. It is always exciting to see someone's family unfold. Continue to have that dogged determination as you pursue other records.
Good luck!

Re: Guarino
Debby,
Thanks for sharing the passport. You're correct that is her mother's maiden name. Her first name was Anna; I'm still trying to noodle out her surname--Dantice? Dartice? If you request a copy of her birth act or check the FHC films, you should find the correct name. Please, let us know if you need any other assistance.
Essgee,
Thanks for your kind words.
Best,
Biff

Good day
Serafina's maiden name is Di Fronzo. I'll check Catholic Cemetery database for Cook County (I have to visit cemetery to do so).
