She was traveling alone. It always astounded me that she made that trip alone at that age. She never described herself as scared. however. She told of an older woman who befriended her and, I believe, looked after her.vj wrote:If your grandmother was traveling with her mother she may be on the manifest under her mother's maiden name.
Her destination was NYC, although she ended up in a commune of sorts working in a sweat shop in laurence, Mass.vj wrote:What was her destination
She was sponsored, I believe, by an organization that did such things for a fee (I believe it was paid to them in the old country) in order to acquire cheap labor - the stories my grandmother told were not pretty. Bottom line - she didn't know the man who "claimed her". She was with many others who were trucked from NYC to Mass. and put up in the same place.vj wrote:& who would she have been joining?

final destination Providence, RI....
Maria's birth year I believe to be June 1888. Carmino (when he was alive we referred to him as Zio Carmino, but his name may very well be Carmine) I thought was an older brother, although I thought not much older. Also, by 1909, I believe that Maria had married and settled in Providence, RI. For this reason, I believe this first record has an equally good chance of being the right one as does the last record.suanj wrote:Boston Passenger Lists, 1820-1943

well this record I believe right, because Carmine (father Giovanni in Caianello) joining at Maria sister in Laurence, MA.....
so if my suggestion is right, we must search the arrival of Maria Laurenza born in Caianello (Caserta province).....
Maria's married name was Campagnone. His firdt name was Luigi, and I believe he was either from Caserta of someplace very close by... certainly from Campagna.suanj wrote:what is the Maria Laurenza's husband surname......?

same person, the birthdate is different.... but no problem, because
the wife is Mary Compagnone...
I believe that both coming from Caianello... many Laurenzas immigrated in USA, and they was residents in Providence, RI or Laurence, MA... so it is very probable the italian birthplace... now we must find almost the 1910 census, so we can know Maia immigration year...
abt "birth location other" is listed the province( caserta) and more precise the town of birth in province area... regards, suanj
I too believe this is the right one now... I've found that my Grandmother's (and her brother Carmine's) father's name was Giovanni. Also, her mother's name was Esther - or the Italian equivalent.suanj wrote:Boston Passenger Lists, 1820-1943
