Garibaldi, Genotti & Vottero Research

Post by MaryGenottiCollins »

Hi,

Just rediscovered this site and renewing my interest in finding more info about my Italian Grandfather Genotti.

He immigrated from Mezzenile, Torino, Italy on December 18, 1909. Born approx May 23 1886.

I am currently trying to find out if another "John Genotti" found in the NY Census of 1920 is him or is simply someone else with the same name, similar birth date etc. It shows him married to someone other than my grandmother w/other children.

I never met him as he died before my birth so am interested in finding out any information that I can.

Thanks!!

mary, ellis island list four genotti's. one was giovanni, john, arriving the year 1909. his final destination was shamokin, pa.

it is possible that he later migrated to new york and is shown in the 1920 census.

good luck, j

Wow! Thank you all for your responses. I'm going to look into the 1910 census to see if this is him. Possibly they mispelled the name.

I knew about the wwii regsitration for draft.

I'm curious if the 1920 is him as well. This shows someone OTHER THAN my grandmother......"if" he had two families, I would not be surprised at all.

Thanks again for the info....

Just looked at the census again and if you look at the one listing....it could be translated as "Gionott" which if you add an italian accent to "Genotti" you may very well translate as such!

This is a real find, thank you so much!

Now, onto the next challenge, there is a story that he went to jail for making moonshine, I don't think this is true...or I've found no proof of it. I think "IF" he had two families (my father's mother and siblings in WV) and the other family in NY....he may have gone to be w/family in NY and not really gone to jail after all.

if in fact he did go to jail for ''moonshine'' you may locate him in a census incarcerated at the EASTERN STATE PENITENTERY , PHILA.,PENNA.

the census for the prison falls under the regular census. when you locate his name then there will a list of inmates....IF.... he was sent to that prison. the mystery continues.

This census is my grandfather, grandmother and father. His name was spelled correctly in a lot of previous things, and he tried to change the spelling later on. Not sure why unless he was hiding from someone or something.

Very interesting! I'll print this and send to my father.

Thanks so much----he's 90 and not doing so well.

Note:
On the 1910 census that suanj found, Giovanni is listed
as not being able to read or write
