Quick question

Post by Luke »

I was researching my family name when I discovered much to my surprise that my grandfather had come to America through Ellis Island. Though they misspelled the last name from Sciommeri to Sciummeri I am almost certain that it is my Grandfather all other information matches up. My question is I know that he returned to Rome after what had to be a brief stay in the states is their anyway for me to find out when he left the US ? Thanks for any help

Hi and welcome to the forum, :D

There are no ships manifests of those who returned to Italy. However, you might be able to trace him if he was here during a federal census year or a state or city census. Can you give us more informationon when and where he arrived or when he went back to Rome? Perhaps you could post his manifest. Someone here might be able to help.

Thank you for the welcome, He arrived Oct 1907 on the Europa My father was Born in Rome in 1932 my dad had three older sisters all were born in Rome. I can only assume that he stayed in the states for only a few years at best. On the ship manifest he is listed as single and 22. I already e-mailed Il commune di Nazzano for any birth records any further ideas or links would be very helpful. I once again thank you for your help.

For reference, Loreto's manifest:

Is this person also a relative?

Isn't it nice to have a rare name? When I was a kid, I hated it. Now it is so much easier to find records. If they have the same name, they are bound to be related.

Hello and thank you I had found those manifists I also placed a call to Rome this morning which confirmed that it was indeed my Grandfather (which to me it's amazing I spent my adult life thinking my Dad was the first Sciommeri male to come to the states)

Onto the I need help aspect . I found out he lived in Providence for 5 years prior to returning to Rome are their any links that I may have overlooked for Rhode Island circa 1910 - 1915 or so.

Yup having an uncommen last name helps in looking up family history but getting the info from unkown cousins is always a challange :D
