Anybody want to take a shot at finding this?

Post by Eleven »

For 15 years, I have been trying to find the ship passenger record for my husbands grandmother. I am beginning to think she swam here.

My big problem is I dont have an accurate surname for her. But, I have enough clues and have done enough searches that if she was there, I would have found her.

About the surname..any records I was able to find for her children, have something different on them. My mother in laws birth record, was typed out by someone..and the surname they transposed..isnt even italian.

Maybe someone else from here can take a shot at this. Maybe I am missing something..or just plain ran out of luck.

Her name is:

Maria Vitra (or Vitro, vitre, veltro, veltra) along those lines.

She was born in 1873

She would have come here in 1894 or possibly the first month of 1895. Not after, because she had a child born here in october of that year. That would make her about 21 years old when she arrived.

She traveled with her small son, Giuseppe D'Alessandro. He was born in 1892 so that would make him about 2-3 years old.

I have searched for him also. I even used figlio with Giuseppe..in case thats how it was listed.

They are from Paduli, Benevento, although for that time period, it will just say Italy on the manifest.

I believe besides the ellis island site, I tried castle gardens, boston and PA ports (not really sure when I did the last two, tho...but, I believe I did.) I also searched Italians to America.

(I swear I think she swam.)

Thanks for giving this a shot. I am afraid that isnt her. It would only be her and her 2 year old child, Giuseppe. No other family came with her.

She lived in a town called Old boston settlement, then. Its called Avoca, now. Its in Pennsylvania.

The husbands name was vincenzo...later he changed that to James. He is listed as James on his census records...and Vincenzo on naturalization records.

I have had all 4 of their census records for years. I found them, even tho there were terrible misspellings on some. There is no info on her surname on any of them...and I believe some say 1895 as when she came and others say 1894.

Is this your family?

WWI Draft Record:
Giuseppe D'Alessandro
(b) 10 Sep 1892
Paduli Campania Italy
Mine Worker
Wife and one child
Hillside Coal & Iron Co.
Luzerne County, PA

1910 Census
Father: Vincent (Vincenzo) (b) 1867 (imm)1893
Mother: Mary (Maria) (b) 1872 (imm)1895
Jenkins, Luzerne, PA

Of course the children are also listed but I wanted to get your input on the birth years and immigration years of Vincenzo and Maria.

Are the above years correct?

That looks like the son. The one that came here with her. I added a bit to my above post. I have the 4 census. The first two, clearly state 1895 as the immigration date. The next two..look more like 1894. They are not as clear as the first two.

She had a child born here, oct 1895. If she came that year, it had to have been in january.

He arrived in 1893. She would have had to arrive by Dec of 1894. So most likely 1893/94 arrival.

Have you written to the comune and gotten a copy of the marriage record? It will give you her maiden name...the name she travelled with and may help identify the name. What information do you have that listed her maiden name? Was it a death certificate, a cemetery record. a family record of some sort?

Did she have an siblings that lived in the same area? Other relatives?

Giuseppe's WWI Draft card states he is a naturalized citizen. If he did naturalize after 1906, footnote.com should have his naturalization docs (Middle District of Pennsylvania). The docs might contain information relative to his date of immigration and the vessel on which he sailed.
