Researching Russo, Tringali and Parisi

Post by Weez_1000 »

Trying to learn more bout my family heritage I know very little about my family other than a few generations. Here is what I know, My mother's maiden name is parisi, her father John Parisi was born in the US in 1912 from there things get very difficult to follow. John's father was Gaetano (Thomas) Parisi and his mother was Carmelina Tringali, we know Carmelina was from Augusta Sicily, we believe Gaetano was also from Augusta. I have seen Carmelina's first name spelled as Carmela, Carmelaine and Carmelina. Both Carmelina and Gaetano were born in 1884 +/- 1 year. Any idea where to start? I have tried all the US online places i could find ie: ancestry.com, LDS records and a few other genealogy sites to no avail.

BTW: The Tringali's and Parisi' all emigrated to the NY/NJ area and spent their entire life here.

My Grandmothers family is even more difficult as her father's name is Anthony Russo which appears to be an incredibly common name in italy.

Thanks
Weez

Biff,

That sounds like it may be a winner, he was a mason his whole life and it all seems to be correct. I don't know about the brother, I have never heard any mention of him but it is certainly possible.

BTW: Where did you find that manifest? None of my searches on ancestry or ellisisland came up with anything?

Thanks!

I searched by the town rather than the name. That way, if a name is badly spelled, you can still see possibilities. By the way, Carmelina is literally "little Carmela." There may have been other Carmelas in the family so she may have been nicknamed Carmelina.

Weez,

I located the ship manifest on Ancestry. If the manifests for Gaetano and Carmel(in)a are correct, Gaetano had a brother Mauro and Carmela had a brother Pietro and her mother's first name was Giuseppa. I've located the family's 1930 census in Garwood, Union county, NJ. Would you like me to post it?

Yes Uncle Dom was Tom's son and they did live in Cranford for a brief time. I really appreciate the searches and posts from the two of you, thanks alot. Its amazing how much you have come up with in one day and how little i have found in the last 2 months. I keep hitting dead ends.

Thanks and I will keep trying different search terms until i can get some solid leads.

Where did you do the searches for the military records?

The 1930 Census was one of the few things that i actually did locate on ancestry. I have tried multiple different searches on ancestry and have yet to come up with that manifest. I consider myself pretty good with trying different terms and methods but its clear im not very good at all.

Hey weez!
Sometimes when you know a location, you can
try searching without a name on ancestry - just
plug in a range of birth years and ’Italy’ .
This was an advanced search on ancestry locking in (exact)
Garwood, born 1884 +/- 5 years, born in Italy:
Valarie

1920 census
Home in 1920:
Garwood, Union, New Jersey
Thomas Perisi 34
Nellie Perisi 33
Mallie Perisi 13
Dominic Perisi 12
Joseph Perisi 9
John Perisi 8
Thomas Perisi 7
Peter Perisi 5
Maurice Perisi 1 9/12

Relationship: son
Father: Tom
Mother: Carmella
Location: New York, Manhattan

1910 census
Home in 1910:

Carmelina Pavese 22
Emanuela Pavese 3
Domonick Pavese 2
Josepha Tringelle 42

A few other sites to look into:

http://www.comune.augusta.sr.it/

http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... a&ind=&nc=

Family History Center has records for Augusta from 1820 to 1929. Records are on microfilm. You have to order them from the FHC and use them at their center. Film is about $6. per roll and takes 3 to 4 weeks to get.
