Annunziato and Virgato (from Salerno province, Campania)

Post by DeniseNYC »

Hello!

I am new to the forum and was referred here by another excellent group -- ExpatsinItaly -- which I have been using extensively to aid me in my quest for dual citizenship.

When I ran into a snag in my search, some forum members suggested I post my information here because you are very experienced with genealogy research methods. I decided to post to this forum (even though I am seeking dual citizenship) because my question has to do with locating my ancestors' birth places, rather than the citizenship process. So... let me know if you need me to move my question!

Hello, Denise

For reference:
1903 manifest for Consiglia line 9

Could line 1 on the same page be your great grandfather? Perhaps they met on the voyage across? Both are single. Could they have married in the States?
Last residence is Olevano possibly Olevano sul Tusciano in the province of Salerno.

1912 manifest, lines 7 and following
Page 1
Page 2
Francesco and Consiglia Annunziata with children Angelo, Carolina, Giuseppe, Luigi and Cosimo. All last residence--Battipaglia and place of birth--Montecorvino R. likely Montecorvino Rovella in the province of Salerno. Destination Stamford CT.

I question the birthplaces of Consiglia and children since Consiglia's 1907 manifest showed her birthplace as Eboli and children Angelo and Carolina's as US born; but it could be Francesco's birthplace.

Hi Denise & Biff!
Could only find a few more clues on ancestry:

1903 manifest for Consiglia Vergato (surname Vergato is still
found in Salerno Province
) may be correct. It appears that
Charles (Angelo?) & Kate (Carolina?) may both have been
born in New Jersey - Consiglia's destination in 1903.

According to your 1907 manifest & 1920 census, son Giuseppe (Joseph?) was born in Italy (Battipaglia?),
abt Aug 1907?
His grandmother was living in Battipaglia, Salerno in 1907...
His may be the easier record to find - it should list both parents & where they were born.

Your 1930 census is proving to be very difficult to find.
A search of the Stamford directories turned up several more addresses for Frank & Consiglia
(Consiglia islisted in 1930 & 1931 as Mary):
1928 60 Alden w/son Charles
1930 Congress w/son Charles
(note Charles is listed on 1930 census as recently married at a different address, born in NJ)
1931 182 West Main Street
1934 High Ridge Road, turn of River

Hi VJ!!!

THANK YOU for the search! Wow! Would you mind sending the link to the 1930 census for Uncle Charlie (Angelo/Charles Annunziato)? I can try to find it too, but I am curious what you are seeing (I have a subscription, but never found this!)

Thank you!!!

ps. Regarding Uncle Joe's town of birth and your suggestion about his birth record...

I know for certain that he was born in Italy (both from Uncle Joe/my family and this record). I can only assume it was in Battipaglia.

However, I saw in other post that Battipaglia does not have birth records prior to 1929. Any idea which town I would write for his birth certificate?

Thanks again!

There are at least two towns with the same CAP code in Italy:
84091 Battipaglia Salerno [SA] Campania
84091 Sant'anna Salerno [SA] Campania

This address may work:

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Comune di Battipaglia
84091 BATTIPAGLIA SA
ITALY

If you need one, a form letter generator:

the address from Tafford Cole’s Book:
Diocese di Battipaglia

Still do not understand why she is single, but I have been calling relatives. Maybe I should check Passaic, NJ
That may work especially if you can get them from the town
clerk's office (less expensive)

Hi again, VJ,
I found out they were married in Montclair, but still do not know the date. Are marriages over 100 years old still not public record in NJ? Do you have any tips on how I might search for the precise date before I request a certified copy of the marriage license? I will try to figure out the marriage date, but wonder if there is another, more precise, way to go about determining it.
Thanks - D

Denise, check the link above for NJ.
You can get a copy, but you have to jump thru a few
hoops  .
Best dates are probably between manifest & birth of 1st child?
Can't think of another way to noodle it out, unless someone
knows which church they were married in.

Denise call them at 973-509-4970 for an appointment and you can apply for a marriage record on the internet at www.state.NJ.US/health/Vital

WOW!!!
Thank you, everyone
Valerie/VJ - I did not even notice your posts with the diocese information. Thank you! Thanks also for all the great information and links. And, Peter, thanks for the help with NJ. I will call the appt line asap.

I started a new post for this, but maybe I should have simply added it here. Do you think these are the right addresses to request birth records for my great-grandparents?

Unless I find out otherwise from the marriage cert, I plan to write Montecorvino Rovella and Eboli for birth certs at the following addresses. Do you think that is wise? Is it possible to reach the diocese in each of these towns for baptism records?

Thanks again in advance!!!!!

Comune di Montecorvino Rovella – Campania
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Piazza Padre Giovanni Da Montecorvino
84096, Montecorvino Rovella (SA)
ITALY

Comune di Eboli - Campania
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Via Matteo Ripa
84025, Eboli (SA)
ITALY
