First name: Barbato

Post by Edmondo »

For a genealogy project I am working on I am looking for members who have a person in their family tree with the first name Barbato

If I am correct this first name is very rare in Italy.

If you have a Barbato in your family tree I am very interested in his surname.

I don't believe that is a first name. It is a last name however. Who do you know that is named Barbato?

Here is a list of all the people wth the first name Barbato who came through Ellis Island. You might want to research where they came from. It looks like the name is common in a few towns. An interesting project!!!

Gio to www. house of names.com for Barbato. Since it is associated with Ventian nobility. No first names were used in that title class until much later when second names came into vogue.

This is evidenced in the listing of first names in the first name dictionary in www.gens.labo,.net/en/cognomi under "nomi" which lacks any reference to Barbato although based on the base name Barba is closely associated with Borbone.

Thank you for the link, I know the site but did not think of it to use it.
It is indeed common in a few towns but very rare in the rest of Italy.

Almost all of them from the Salerno province are related to "Valle dell'Angelo" and these are the ones I am looking for.

For more info about the origin of the name: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Barbatus

My great grandfather (Bn 1857) and my uncle (Bn 1913) are named Barbato Mastandrea and are from Valle dell'Angelo. My uncle uses the name Robert in the US. There are several Barbato Mastandreas who ended up in South America.

My Great-Grandfather's name was Barbato Mastandrea. Settled in New York and sometime between 1900 and 1910 moved to Chicago.
However, I have found several sources he also used the name of Guiseppe Joseph and Robert. Deed records show name of Barbato, probate record used Guiseppe, but in small print Alias name.

According to 1900 census NY 1865, 1910 census Chicago 1862, and 1920 census Chicago 1861. His DC states yr. born Unknown gives age approximately 54, he died 1921 in Chicago, this would give yr. born 1867.

Remaining family does not know where in Italy born.

Thank you for your reply appreciate your time.

Hi,

I have information on 2 Barbato Mastrandrea/Mastandreas in NY. One was married to Grazia and the other to Giuseppa.

Do you have any dates, what village he was from, name of wife, son's name?
