Help with Italian surname spelling
Help with Italian surname spelling
Can someone possibly please help me with the surname spelling of a great, great, great grandmother. My great great grandmothers death certificate is typed showing her fathers name and her mothers maiden name, unfortunatley due to typing errors I am unable to read the full last name. The clearly reads: Asteggi (however the 3 final letters are unclear). Possible options appear to be: Asteggiqno, Asteggiano, Asteggiono, Asteggione, Asteggiono. Does anyone recognize this Italian last name?
Re: Help with Italian surname spelling
Can you tell us the town of origin, or even the province? region?
You find certain names are specific to certain areas.

Re: Help with Italian surname spelling
might be Potenza which is a provincial capital in Basilicata region. =Peter=
Re: Help with Italian surname spelling
My understanding is that the family came from the northern region of Italy, near Torino. Another possiblity might be Pollenza but I don't know for sure.
Re: Help with Italian surname spelling
I agree with Peter, POTENZA seems much more likely.
There is no POLENZO in Italy, and the closest match to that spelling would be POLENTO.

Pollenzo is a frazione of the comune of Bra in the province of Cuneo. It's about 60 km south of Torino. According to the surname search engine at www.italia.indettaglio.it, there are at least 57 people with the surname Asteggiano living in the comune of Bra today. You can go to www.pollenzo.it for more information.

Re: Help with Italian surname spelling
The town could be Pallanza, which now (since 1939 is part of the Comune di Verbania. Province Verbania, Region Lombardia.
And the surname could be Asteggiano.
And the surname could be Asteggiano.
