Looking for help with Scaccia

Post by caroyce »

I am trying to research any relations to Liborio Scaccia. This is what I already have on him:

Liborio was born in Italy. His parents were Joseph (Giuseppe Scaccia) and Barbara Angeline Muscarella (Mascarelli)??

Liborio emigrated from Palermo, Italy to America in the early 1890's. (1897 according to 1910 census and 1898 according to petition for naturalization). He left Italy on February 19, 1898 and arrived in New York, NY on March 10, 1898.(Ellis Island records say he arrived May 1, 1898). He lived in Contarontoro Scicily when he emigrated to the US aborad the Hesperia. He arrived in the US via New York City.He did this with the help of the Longo's, the family of his future wife, Anna Longo.

If anyone has any assistance I would appreciate it.

Welcome to IG.
You have completed quite a bit of US research, are you looking to further your Italian research into Scaccia, or do you need help with the Longo family here in the US?

Hi and thanks for your repy.

I have done research on all parts of the family including the Longo's. Most of the information I have puts my ancestors in the Scranton area although recently I have found some connections in New York.

I am attaching at the end of this posting the information I have on the Longo's as of this point and was hoping to begin to trace this side as well as the Scaccia side in even more detail.

Christine

He married HEDWIG SZULECKI 29 Jun 1921 in Scranton, PA, daughter of JAN SZULECKI and LEONA. She was born 08 Apr 1904 in Poland, and died 16 Feb 1964 in Scranton, PA.
Notes for JOSEPH FRANK SCACCIA:
Joseph was born in Scranton.

He was educated in the Scranton School District and attended Scranton Technical High School but left school
after the eighth grade.

His SSN: 203-03-3694.
He was a salesman for Michaels Produce in Northeastern, PA and New York. His job was referred to as a
huckster which was the name given to produce sales people who travelled by horse and carriage and later trucks
to different neighborhoods to sell vegetables and fruits. With the onset of automobiles and ice boxes, Joe
eventually opened a business in the **SPAM** Block--a series of warehouses on Lackawanna Avenue near the
river where produce was brought into the city. For a while, he cornered the celery market and was considered the
Celery King.

According to Ginny Scaccia's memory - he liked to drink Muscatel Wine and smoked cigars. He visited several
bars.

Joseph, as the Olden, was never able to please his mother.
He was married to Harriet Szulecky on January 29, 1921 at Sacred Heart's Polich Catholic Church in South

Scranton, PA. He later divorced Harriet and then remarried her in 1946. They were originally or the second time married in Sacred Heart Church, Scranton, PA.
Hattie and Joe eventually designed and built a home on the West Mountain which still stands. It is a one floor dwelling set into the side of a hill with a garage and basement below. Somewhere along the way, perhaps near the Stock Market Crash of 1929, Hattie and Joe lost this house.
It is told that they eventually ended up at the German Catholic Church because they were unable to make the required offering the the church (St. Lucy's) to baptize Eugene Scaccia.
He lived with Edmund and Ann Samuels at 1009 Luzerne Street when he died. Prior to his death, he was a patient at the Community Medical Center for three weeks. He is buried in the St. John the Baptist Section of the Cathedral Cemetery.

Notes for HEDWIG SZULECKI: Hattie (Harriet) Szulecky (Sulezski) was born on April 8, 1904 in Katowice near the city of Krakow (Cracow), Poland. At the time of her birth, there was no actual Poland as it was partitioned between Germany, Russia, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, so by location, it is presumed that the area was under control of the Austro Hungarian Empire. [Note: John Scaccia once told Joseph Scaccia (author of much of this information) that Jan Szulecky left Poland for the United States to avoid service in the Russian Czar's Army.] Regardless of the countless times the area had been partitioned, the Polish people remained Polish disregarding as much as possible the changing politics and areas in the area we know as Poland today which emerged around 1918 at the end of World War I. Hattie based on her lineage was half Polish, one quarter German, and one quarter French (see notes about French grandmother) but always referred to herself as being Polish.
Hedwig was the fourth daughter of Jan and Leona Szulecky who has six daughters.
Hattie was blond as a young woman with blue eyes and very light complexion. According to Lily Szulecky, one of Hattie's granddaughters Virginia Scaccia Serine looks very much as Hattie did as a child. It is believed that Hattie could have claimed to be fully German or Scandinavian and it would not have been doubted by her looks. After years in this country, she lost all trace of her accent and it has been stated that when her obituary appeared and mentioned Poland as her place of birth, many people expressed shock believing she had been German, Irish, or American born.
IMMIGRATION TO AMERICA: Leona and her four middle daughters went to Hamburg, Germany where they boarded a German ship for the US. [Joseph Scaccia is pretty sure the city was Hamburg, but it might also have been Gdansk (formerly Dansik) Poland may have been the city of departure.] Hattie told stories that the seas were rough and the waves were higher than the sides of the ship. They made the trip in what was called the steerage which was the lowest class of travel. It is also likely the ship was a cargo ship that took on immigrant passengers in available space for the additional money and conditions were not for comfort but for expediency. They probably had little privacy on the ship and it is likely that they only had the floor to sleep in a common area with other immigrants.
She came to America at the age of eight years old. They left in late November, and arrived in early December of 1912 most likely December 12, 1912 at Ellis Island from Krakow, Poland. Hedwig's name was changed to Harriet when she entered America through Ellis Island. When she arrived here, she was put back into the first grade as was done with most immigrants who could not speak English.
Considering the young age when she left Poland, Hattie had a good memory of the days in Poland. She told stories about being left out of school so the children could weed the priest's garden and that she recalled pulling a carrot by mistake and hiding it so the priest wouldn't find it...based on this story, it can be presumed that education was started in a church run school. She also remembered the priest had a pet peacock that roamed through the garden.
Hattie also recalled that before leaving Poland she was taken to see her godmother and on that trip she saw the famous icon of the Blessed Virgin--the world famous Lady of Chestakova--known as the Black Madonna because of the soot that had accumulated on the painting from the candles that are lit below and in front of the painting. Given the period of time and distance between Katowice and Chestakova, that was a trip that might indicate some financial assets while in Poland.
The family was reunited in December 1912. She resided in Southside with her parents. Six months after being reunited, her father was killed in a mining accident. Hattie went to work at the age of about 12 as there was now a need for the daughters to help support the family. She left school in the fourth grade to do this. In the beginning, it is believed that she could only work five days a week with additional schooling conducted at Scranton Technical High School on Saturdays.
Hattie met Joseph Scaccia when she was talking to a girlfriend at the girl's home near a railroad track. The friend spotted Joseph and thought he was cute. When Joseph responded and headed across the the street, her friend realized that her stockings were rolled down around her ankles for comfort around the house, but never --never at that time would a lady show her leg to a gentleman unless it was covered by a stocking. Embarrassed by her realization, she quickly rushed into her house and closed the door leaving Hattie outside to meet Joseph Scaccia.
According to John Scaccia (Hattie's son), Hattie had some difficulties at home with her mother and left home to live with a Mrs. Scott. He also said that it was this Mrs. Scott who taught Hattie how to cook. This might be an explanation a to why Hattie always cooked what was considered a bland menu. Hattie did not cook Polish foods for the most part.
At the age of 17, she left home and married Joseph Scaccia. She was never accepted by Joseph's parents even though she fully adopted the Italian traditions.
She worked as a sewing factory worker. Hattie tried to become completely Americanized. Joseph her son retells the story that on the trip to America, Hattie was called a "greenhorn" which was a derogatory statement used against immigrants when they were unaware of something considered to be "American". Joseph heard Hattie retell this story in her 50s and he could still sense the hurt in her voice as she related the incident. Another story that supported this becoming American theory was that Joseph was speaking with Lily and Andrew Nashotka and that Andrew said he knew Hattie before he met Lily because he had met her at a dance at the Polish Church. Lily replied that he was mistaken because Hattie never went to the dances at the Polish Church..
Harriet was divorced from Joseph and married Frank Herman who was 20 years her elder. She was only married for about six months when she divorced Frank Herman. She was not married when her son Joseph was born and Frank Herman is believed to be Joseph's father. Proof to that fact includes that Joseph doesn't resemble or have the same physical features as the rest of the Scaccia children.
After she divorced Frank Hermann, Hattie, Betty, Joseph, and perhaps Gene went to Detroit. Eventually the returned to the house on Luzerne Street with Ann Scaccia and Edmund Samuels living on one side and Hattie and the remaining children living on the other.
Hattie eventually remarried Joseph Scaccia around 1947. In the late 1940s, Hattie also returned to work at a sewing factory in Taylor, but eventually took over running the grocery store at 1139 Luzerne Street full time.
At the age of 53, she first got her own driver's licence and bought a car.
Hattie and Joseph separated informally for the last time in 1957.
Hattie was stricken with a heart attach at the store on February 15, 1964. She was unconscious at the time of attach (so it may have been a stroke rather than a heart attack. A discussion among her children (Ann, John, Gene, and Betty) on the night of their mother's death centered on who had been her favorite child. Their conclusion was that if Hattie had a favorite child, she didn't show it and that what ever child needed her at the given moment, that she was there for them and he or she was given favorite status.
Hattie is buried in the Cathedral Cemetery.

Hello, Christine

I don't believe that the Liborio on the 1 May 1898 Hesperia manifest is the correct person. Year of birth shows him born about 1860 and he is travelling with his wife and children on lines 2 and following.
1898 Hesperia manifest

Possible birthplace:
Caltavuturo, province: Palermo - region: Sicily

Christine, You are contuining what my Uncle Joseph and i believe your father started. I like the comments from Ginny on Harriett and Lilly trip from Poland. Lilly would tell Her story of leaving the dirt road in Poland to be re-united with their father on Lakawanna Ave. many times. I will add some thoughts that she shared with me about coming to America, working in the silk mills and buying the farms in Moscow,Penn. Her favorite line was, " honey if you want something, you have to work for it". She had Patriorical type of faith with the ability to see Her future and then work to make it happen.
What ever happened to her Hansel and Grettle house. I always felt we were on an enchanted visit to happiness when ever we visited her.
Well, I think I am your cousin.

Joseph and Albert...
I believe we are related as well. Joseph was my great uncle. My grandmother was Ann Marie Scaccia Samuels and my mother was Ann Marie Sanuels...I would love to spend some time comparing notes and references...I bet we could fill quite a bit in for each toher. I don't ever remember it being called the Hansel and Grettle house - but always knew we were close when we got on the bumpy dirt road....If you want please feel free to email me at caroyce@aol.com and we can see if we have additional inforamtion for each other.

I know this is an old thread, but I was indexing Petitions for Naturalization from Middle District, Pennsylvania, United States and ran across Liborio Scaccia, No. 1178 Nov 6, 1911. I googled his name and found this thread.

Occupation listed as peddler.
Birthplace of his wife Anna listed as Sicily, not Naples.
Four children are listed, but he reported their birthdates differently than recorded earlier in this thread.
Joseph born Mar 27, 1903
Barbara born Jan 1, 1906
Edward born Dec 21, 1908 (so younger than Barbara, not older)
Marie Antoinette may 13, 1911

These four all born in Scranton, PA. Since the dates came directly from the parents and were recorded within less than a year of Marie being born, I assume that these dates are accurate.
