Fopeano heritage

Post by klmarchetti »

I was recently on here looking for information on my father's family and learned a great deal from the gracious members of this wonderful site! I am hoping I can get a little more help...

I am looking for anything I can find on my great-great grandparents and their heritage. My GGGF's name was Casper (or Gasper) Fopeano born in 1815 in Italy. He eventually lived in PA, but I don't know when he immigrated. All I know about my GGGM is that her name - Grosanna (don't know her maiden name) born in 1823 in Italy. I don't know where in Italy they're from, or anything about their parents, siblings, etc.

Any information would be appreciated and THANK YOU in advance! :D

Hi K :D !
Welcome back.
I noticed a private family site on ancestry .com with possible information for your family.
They lived in Elk County, PA?
Is it your site?
Thanks! Valarie

Yes, they did live in Elk County, PA. That is a relative of mine's site... I got all the information I have from it for that side of my family, and I was trying to find more details about them and trace back beyond that. When I searched for Gasper, the only person I found was "Casper" with the same birth year on familysearch.org.

I had forgotten that they were from near Genoa, Italy. I would also assume they immigrated before 1860 as it says Grosanna died in Kersey, PA in 1860.

Hi!

As I'm from Liguria region I can be pretty sure that the correct last name was Foppiano...

Hope this helps...

Finding your US census records shouldn’t be too difficult if you’re missing any.
Your Italian records will be a challenge unless you know your family’s exact town of origin.
Laura’s suggestion for the original spelling of your name may also help locate a manifest (among other records :D ), but early manifests didn’t have much information on them.
Have the death records and all of the children’s birth and marriage records been located? Sometimes these records list where the parents were born.
Another possibility would be local church records. The family’s church may not be too difficult to locate.
I believe the family farm was in Fox, Elk county? The cemetery records may also lead to which church the family used. Birth, Christening, Baptism, Marriage, and Death records may contain clues…

Is there a site to access the Census and other documents for free? I'm still rather new at this, so I'm sure I don't know of all the resources out there yet (I'm also finishing up med school and trying to save my pennies for now :) ). I basically have searched on myheritage.com and used the family site you referenced earlier to find most of the information I have so far (which is a lot more than I expected to find!), in addition to the great information you found provided me before.

If you would prefer to do the research yourself, which is half the fun... :D
then most public libraries as well as genealogy societies have access to paid databases for free!!

Among these are Ancestry, Heritage Quest, and numerous others.

These sources can sometimes be accessed for free trial, with or without limited information, from the convenience of your home.

If you would like us to, members can search for you...but we will wait to see how you want to proceed.

K
In addition to checking with your library as wldspirit suggested, I sent you a PM with a list of free sites that may help.
I get HeritageQuest at home from my local library - it has a pretty neat search engine.

Hey suanj :D ,
Do you think the boarder's name is correct (1860)?
Perhaps it could be a clue?

Hi Valarie, is a strange surname... Rebura....(!)
I have no idea of exact spell...

maybe this is the ship's manifest of Gaspare FOPPIANO:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about G Foppiano
Name: G Foppiano
Arrival Date: 9 Apr 1851
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1818
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Genoa, Italy
Destination: United States of America
Place of Origin: Italy
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian
Ship Name: Arbace

Search Ship Database: Search the Arbace in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York
Line: 5
Microfilm Serial: M237
Microfilm Roll: M237_96
List Number: 314
Port Arrival State: New York
Port Arrival Country: United States

in travel with Maria Canessa (?) FOPPIANO wife age 28 and little Antonietta daughter 5 months old...
frankly, I believe this is a interesting record....

suanj, I agree the manifest is very interesting!
K said that Gaspare's wife was born in 1823, this record would fit.
