ROVEDO Genealogy

Post by MSGRovedo »

Hello all -

Looking for information about, or other relatives of, my grandfather Vittorio Rovedo, also known as Victor J. Rovedo. He was born in Tramondi di Sotto, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia in 1879. He immigrated to Michigan in about 1906, but may have entered earlier in 1899. He was an iron miner and may have had cousins named Desiderio and Antonio who worked with him in the mines there. He also may have had a brother named Germanico who was there and also spent time in Connerville, Pennsylvania. I believe his parent's names may have been Giovanni and Maria (Serpa) Rovedo.

His wife was Maria (Toffolo) Rovedo and she was also born in Tramonti, but resided in Frisanco prior to her immigration in 1911. They both moved to Woonsockett, Rhode Island sometime in 1920's, where they died. Their children were my father Angelo Giovanni (Andy), Annie, Merico, Giuseppi Luigi (Joseph L.) and Antonio (Tony).

I have already searched all the manifests and census records on Ancestry.com. There are not a lot of Rovedo's in Italy, although they're all pretty much located in the Pordenone area. Most in the USA started out in Colorado, Michigan, Massachusetts and New York. I'd be willing to bet we're all related. Any other information, or help in pointing me in the right direction, would be greatly appreciated.

Are you related to a Merico Rovedo from Woonsocket who worked for a Pasta company there?

My Grandmother was best friends with his mother.

Try the mormon lds center for:

Tramonti di Sotto
and
Tramonti di Sopra

The microfilm is listed on their website if you sign in. Otherwise, you won't find anything. Its expensive. But worth it.

Rovedo family is there. They went first to Colorado, then Michigan, and finally Massachusetts.

My grandfather was Giovanni Rovedo.

I guess I should have read your posting closer. You ARE related to Merico!

Hi

I'm very new to this, but I tried looking up your grandfather through Ellis Island and nothing came up. I saw the other names you referenced Germanico etc. but not your grandfather. I tried the sounds like and came up with Vittorio (last name spelled different but sounds like it) and it's listed as 1914 and age doesn't match what you say.

I also looked for your grandmother under both names - maiden and married and nothing for 1911. Closest was 1914 and this Maria came with a child and was destined for Spokane, WA with a son. Says to meet husband and the name was not your grandfathers.

Are you sure about your grandfathers birthdate etc. Also, there were a few names on the list from the town you referenced but many had Udine listed. My search came up with 48 people with that surname through Ellis Island.

Don't know if any of this helps or not.

Note:

Tramonti di Sopra and Tramonti di Sotto were both in the Province of Udine prior to 1969. When you get the microfilm from lds, you'll notice that they are listed under both Provinces (Pordenone and Udine). Suprisingly, there are some documents in German and Russian.

As for Michigan connection, look up Dante Rovedo. I have had relations from Italy move to all three states mentioned above and also definitely Canada,Argentina, and possibly Brazil.

Also, if you don't find them coming in through ellis island, try Castle Island (there is a searchable online site for this), and port of Boston.

Don't bother looking at Frisanco for Rovedos on microfilm. I couldn't find one.

Hello Michael:
I have a question about Maria Toffolo. My great-grandfather Domenico Toffolo was born in Frisanco and lived together with his father Antonio Toffolo, his mother Anna Maria del Bianco, his sisters Maria, Lucia, Maria Luisa, Ecolastica and one brother Agostino. Domenico emigrated together with Agostino to Argentina, South America in 1909.Two or three years later emigrated his parents and sisters, but Maria continued way to USA and contact was lost.Your grandmother was in contact with his family? She said that she had relatives in Argentina?. I'm trying to find information on my grandfather's sister. Thanks for your help and Regards.

joining at husband Vittorio Rovedo ...
I believe that Vittorio arrived around 1908/9 and not 1906; Maria was 23 old in the ship's manifest... Vittorio around 1899 sure was in military service in Italy... so almost until 1900 he was in Italy... I believe they married around 1908.... and after Vittorio emigrated.... Maria was so young and not children, so the marriage was recent... just my idea....

suanj

suanj,

The 1920 census is correct, however the census takers (as well as the people interviewed) sometimes had limited knowledge of their backgrounds and the English language. The census should read Victor, Mary, Annie, Angelo and Americo (known as Merico). I've found several manifests and census records that were far off in their data.

As an example the 1930 census has the last name Rovedo misspelled to Rovedt.
