Re: Welcome to ItalianGenealogy.com! Looking for Terzano

Post by AndrewK »

Thank you for welcoming me! I have been researching my family: Terzano of Rotello, Campobasso, Molise for a while now. I have however hit a dead end after two male births in 1805 in Rotello. I unfortunately cannot find another Terzano until the mid 1800's, and that is in Genova! Did they migrate North? I understand there was an earthquake near Rotello in or around 1805,records destroyed? I am looking specifically for the parents of Vincenzo/Vittorio Terzano born around 1843 in Rotello. Any help on anyone of the name Terzano would be greatly appreciated.

My 4GGA Petronilla Terzano was born in Rotello circa 1785. She was the daughter of Arcangelo Terzano and Lucia Minelli. She married my 4GGU Luigi Trotta of Campobasso and they raised their family in that comune. Terzano is a very old surname of Campobasso. In fact, you can still see the ruins of Torre Terzano (11th Century) near Chiesa di San Bartolomeo. There might be a connection between the Terzano family of Rotello and that of Campobasso. Do you have more information about Vincenzo/Vittorio Terzano and his family?

Thank you for your response, John. I believe Vincenzo was married to a Carmela DeSantis of at the very least Campobasso, if not Rotello. Some confusion has arisen however due to one of his sons, also named Vincenzo, marrying a Carmela. The elder Vincenzo is my dead end. I need his father to make the full connection form Italy to America. There is a chance he is the connection, but his father, possibly Guisseppe Maria(b.1803) or Raffeale(b.1805) would have to have been in thier forties for that to have happened. God knows how old their wives were! I have not been able to find information on any of their sons, or brothers for that matter, if they had any at all. Any Info., as usual, would be very much appreciated.

Vincenzo Luciano Terzano, age 28, and Maria Carmela de Santis, age 22, were married on 16 APR 1872 in Campobasso. Vincenzo Luciano was the son of Andrea Terzano (born 06 JUN 1820 in CB) and Maria Francesca di Girolamo (proietta, born circa 28 SEP 1824 in CB). Maria Carmela was the daughter of Vincenzo Paolo de Santis (born 05 APR 1809 in CB) and Maria Antonia Catelli (born 13 JUN 1819 in CB). Are Vincenzo Luciano Terzano and Maria Carmela de Santis your direct ancesctors? If so, how do you descend from them?

Thank you! GRAZIE!!!!
Vincenzo & Maria Carmella had a son, not called Vincenzo, but rather Vittorio. Vittorio(b.1887) also married a Carmella, last name Coscia. Vittorio & Carmella had a son Spartaco Vincenzo Terzano(1914-1996). Spartaco, or Terry as he was known, was my Mother's father! My mother is Marilyn Terzano. One more question. Who was Andrea's father? Could it have been Raffeale or Guissepe Maria, or is there another brother that I cannot locate? Andrea, by the way, was the name of one of Vittorio's brothers and the reason for my name. Great Stuff! I also notice yuo are from WNY. That is where my Grandfather was as a child. My mother seems to recognize your last name from Cliffside Park. I was raised in Ridgefield. My understanding is Vittorio brought his family to Jersey from Brooklyn.

Hi Andrew
One more question. Who was Andrea's father? Could it have been Raffeale or Guissepe Maria, or is there another brother that I cannot locate?

Andrea Terzano was the son of Vincenzo Paolo Terzano (born 04 SEP 1778) and Maria Irene Eliseo (born 21 FEB 1785), both of CB. Maria Francesca di Girolamo was a proietta or foundling; she was placed into the care of wet nurse Saveria di Bartolomeo, wife of Giuseppe Rezza.

Vincenzo Paolo de Santis was the son of Antonio Nicola Maria de Santis (born 07 SEP 1761) and Aurelia Fagliarone (born circa 1765), both of CB. Maria Antonia Catelli was the daughter of Giuseppe Maria Catelli (born 06 MAR 1799) and Agnese Catelli (born circa 1799), both of CB.

Your Terzano line extends from your mother as follows: Marilyn Terzano > Spartaco Vincenzo Terzano > Vittorio Terzano > Vincenzo Luciano Terzano > Andrea Terzano > Vincenzo Paolo Terzano > Crescenzo Terzano > Nicola Terzano. I believe Nicola Terzano was born circa 1700.
I also notice yuo are from WNY. That is where my Grandfather was as a child. My mother seems to recognize your last name from Cliffside Park.

I grew up in the Madonna della Libera parish of WNY/North Bergen. I suspect that your Grandfather also lived there since a number of campobassani families helped found the parish in 1898. In fact, your Grandfather's sister, Francesca Incoronata Terzano, is the grandmother of a family friend. She lived in WNY with her second husband, Francesco Gabriele of Campobasso. My grandparents owned and operated the Park Casino (the local nightclub located right next to Miller Stadium, where St. Joseph's and Memorial played) and my father was a four-term mayor of WNY. Perhaps that's why the name Armellino seems familiar to your mother. I'm sure your Grandfather knew my Grandparents - they all knew each other in those days.

Truly incredible. How do do it? Is it possible you have any birth or death years for any of these people? It's actually my GGF Vittorio's sister Francesca(b. 1871 CB), not my grandfather's. He had no sisters. The Gabriele's are still in connection with various Terzanos and cousins thereof.

I've been working with the Campobasso records for some time now, so all of this data is already in my database. If you want, I'll put together what I have on your family lines and post it for you.

BTW, your 3GGU was Bartolomeo Maria Terzano, was one of Italy's leading cutlers of the 19th century. In 1861, he was commissioned to create a hunting dagger for King Vittorio Emanuele II, which knife is now on display in Torino. It's inscribed "Rome wants you as its King - Venice is inviting you" and "Thanks to you the whole of Italy rises united". Some of his work is also displayed at the Museo di Capodimonte di Napoli. I have a small pen knife and several razors that bear his Maker's Mark. He was married twice, first to Carolina Ferrari and later to her sister Anna Maria Carmina Cristina Ferrari, daughters of Giovanni Maria Ferrari of Genova. Perhaps the Terzanos you found in Genova are connected to Bartolomeo in some way.

If you were able to do that, I would truly be grateful. I'm trying to organize one last Terzano reunion, 1st since the 60's, in Brooklyn. That is the main purpose for all of my inquiries. As for Bartolomeo, I had found the information on his marriage(s) but had no idea of his cutlery skills and accolades! In researching Rotello and the region around CB, I found that the area was world reknowned for its' Knife and scissor making. In fact, my Aunt has a pair of shears that my GGF Vittorio used as a barber. It had been said that his Father Vincenzo made them.
My Aunt also got a kick out of finding out who you are /from. She knew of the Park Casino!
Thank you so much, on behalf of all who call themselves Terzano!

That's what I have to date. I'm still working with the early church records and I will keep you updated.

John,

You have been tremendous help. I'll keep you on the invite list for the reunion. If the full blown event cannot be had for any reason, a smaller gathering of the Terzano family will be arranged in New Jersey. You can talk old Hudson County times with them at the least and leave with a full belly!
Again, thank you. Sincerely, thank you. My kids will benefit greatly from the informtion you have provided me.

-Andy

Edited to add: Another branch! You better get talkin'!

Hi , I am descended from Nicola Terzano (ca 1698) via my great grandmother Assunta Terzano Gentile. I have the family names - DiSantis, Fagliarone, Catelli, Panunzio, Pietrunto, DiLembo, Petti, Caruso, Romano, Eliseo, di Girolamo etc in my family tree. Any tips on researching into the 17th century? Finding out about family history beyond just names? Thanks, Michael
