Anyone know what this name may have been in Italy
Anyone know what this name may have been in Italy
Looked for the name Denoi now for two years. It doesn't show up on The Ellis Island Site or the one where you put the name in and a map will show where those names come from in Italy. Anyone?

Hi
I use this site for origin of names
http://www.cognomiitaliani.org/cognomi/ ... 0004en.htm
Don't see anything close
If you select the letter D just below it will give you sub's for the D's. You may want to check it out with various spellings.
Still looking for different options for the name.

Re: Anyone know what this name may have been in Italy
In the International Genealogical Index there are many instances of Denoi showing in Cavanac, Aude, France back as far as the 1700'sConti832 wrote:Looked for the name Denoi now for two years. It doesn't show up on The Ellis Island Site or the one where you put the name in and a map will show where those names come from in Italy. and also this instance of the name showing in Yorkshire in England:
JOSEPH DENOI
Gender: Male Birth: 20 OCT 1800 Barnsley, Yorkshire, England
In addition, the name shows in Ca. Ga. Mis. NJ. and Oh.
There are also a couple of DeNoi - could that perhaps be the spelling. They show in the early 1900's in N. Dakota...
But what exactly are you seeking? Just the name or people carrying it?

Denoi is French and not located in Italy at this time while Denoia is confined to three towns in Bari province but even that surname is not listed as an Italian surname in the Italian surname dicitonary making it most likely French and italianized leaving open to the possiblity that it was orginally Denoi. =Peter=

Oftimes this occurs not only with surnames but also as it relates to first names, particularly in families where cousins may have the same name and are differentiated by nicknames or other family related names to distinguish one family from another.=Peter=
