I am new to the forum and need help in finding my grandfather

FORTUNATO CARINO. I belive he was born in MORRA IRPINO

In the 1890's he lived in MORRA IRPINO, Avellino, Italy (now called MORRA DE SANCTIS) and was married to Maria Michela DEPAOLO.

His oldest son (my father) Gabriele Felice Carino was born In Morra Irpino in 1893. He immigrated to Greenwich, Connecticut in 1909 and later settled in Harrison, New York where I was born.

I want to learn when and where my grandfather was born and when and where he died in Italy. Also, I want to find his parents and siblings so I can track descendants and ancestors in Italy and in the United States.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Was looking at your father's 1909 manifest, it states he was joining his father in CT.
Do you have your grandfather's ship manifest?
It may confirm his birth location.

It is hard to tell which one is the right Fortunato, but I'll bet it's one of your manifest finds.
For reference, the 1930 census with mother Maria born abt 1860 living with son Gabriel.
So Fortunato was probably born before 1860.

Thank you all for your wonderful responses regarding my grandfather Fortunato Carino and my father Gabriel Carino.

I’ve been researching my family for a number of years, but did not know that my grandfather came to the United States – perhaps twice, and even more surprised that his routes were by way of Canada. I also want to thank trevisan2 for bringing me to this site.

If Fortunato first arrived in America in 1904, then these border crossing records answer a lot of questions I’ve had about my father’s first arrival in America in 1906 at the age of 13. It may have been arranged by his father. At some point, the two of them returned to Italy, most likely together. Later, Fortunato returned to America in 1907 and arranged for his son to come over in 1909 at age 16. It appears Fortunato returned to Italy to rejoin his wife Maria where he ultimately died. Of course I’m looking for additional sources to corroborate this scenario.

I am now pursuing another avenue of research to see why Fortunato used Canada as his entry into the United States. I would like to find manifests for his ship passages in 1904 and 1907, and his ports of entry into the United States from Canada.

To answer your questions: Yes, I have all of the records identified in the postings, with the exception of the border crossings. Yes, I have looked at some microfilm records from the LDS Family History Library on Morra DeSanctis (Morra Irpino) and found birth records for Gabriele and his brother Paolo.

To date I’ve not found records for Fortunato, his wife Maria and his siblings in Italy, which is my ultimate goal.

Perhaps knowledge of Fortunato’s nephews in America (Antonio Carino and Gerardo or Generoso Carino) may shed some light on his siblings.

The Strazza’s in the 1930 US Census are related to Gabriel Carino’s wife - Mary Agnes Strazza. My next posting will be to find the Italian birthplace of her parents Rocco STRAZZA and Rosaria PRESTO.

Again, thank you all so much for your help, particularly about border crossings. Any other information or hints on where to search will be greatly appreciated!

I can tell you that the surname "Carino" is a diminutive form of the name "Caro," from the Latin word "carus," meaning, "beloved." Italian surnames were established in the late 10TH Century, so this means your ancestor at the time's personal name was "Carino." Also, there was a Roman Emperor Carinus, as "Carino" is the Italian form of the Latin "Carinus." My Great-Grandmother Incoronata Maria Giammarino was also from Morra Irpino.

Caro has also been known to have been derived from the Spanish name Conforto since it is not listed in the current listing of Italian first names in some listings such as www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi and select "NOMI" for listing. Caro, of course as a word is also derived from the Roman Latin name CARUS as you state.

Italian surnames commenced inthe 10th century but only for nobility and it was not until the 12th century when non titled nobility or persons of significant means commenced using surnames and it was not until the late 13th century that the common people of all stripes began using surnames. =Peter=
