I had a relative who arrived in New York, Ellis Island in 1909. His name along with others were crossed out and he was sent back to Europe on the same boat. The only thing that might account for this was he had no one was listed in the "final destination" column or "nearest relative or friend in country whence alien came" column. I went to the last pages of the manifest for a list of detained passagers but his name was not listed. Any input would be appreciated.

Name on ship's manifest is lined out, why?
Re: Name on ship's manifest is lined out, why?
Hi John,
I believe that when a name is crossed out it means that the person didn't sail on that boat....
Usually the persons who are listed in the "Detained Aliens" are also present in the manifests.... and their names are no crossed...

Laura,
Thanks for the information; I did additional research and this makes sense. Thanks again.
