Newbie needs help with Francisco Morelli

Post by rosebushr »

I am a newbie trying to find out any information on my great grandparents. My great grandfather was Francisco Morelli, who lived in or near Segromigno in Piano, Italy (in the Province of Lucca). I dont know when he was born but he died around 1895, in Segromigno in Piano. Francisco's father was Micheli Morelli and his mother's first name began with a "M".

Francisco married Amabile Rondina, from Sappio, Italy, in about 1880. Amabile was born about 1850. Her father was Giovanni Rondina, who died in Sappio, Italy. Her mother was Domenica Ballestrini, who we know nothing more about.

Francisco and Amabile had five children; John (b 1882), Joseph (b 1884), Giovanni Raphaelo (b 1885), Teolindo (b 1888) and Maria Domenica Annunziata (b 1891, who I am related to). Sometime after Francisco death in 1895, Amabile moved to Albuqueque, New Mexico, USA and died in 1934. With my grandmother having the "Annunziata", I dont know where that came from....ie last name, first name, town, I have no idea. Any thoughts on this would be helpful.

I am trying to find out any information on Francisco, Micheli or M, and his wife Amabile or her parents Giovanni or Domenica. If anyone can help me out, give me advice on where to go or who to contact, I would greatly appreciate it. I have joined Ancestry.com, but they have no leads for any information from Italy. My only information starts in the USA. I am trying to make the leap from the USA back to Italy and all of the ancestor there.

I thank you in advance.

Segromigno in Piano is a frazione (suburb or neighborhood) of CAPANNORI. Go to www.nonsolocap.it and put in city name, click CERCA and when the website comes up scroll down to Municipio for ther address of the Uficio di Stato Civile where you can request all Birth, marriage and death records.

Go to the following website for form letters to send to Capannori.

If you have any further questions get back to us. =Peter=

Don't know if you already have, this is the arrival manifest for Amabile, from http://www.ellisisland.org/ travelling with her daughter Teodolinda and Annunziata, she was joining her son Giuseppe Morelli in Hoboken, NJ and stated Sesto as last residence in Italy....

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0002

I believe Sesto is a Fraction of Lucca...
Found this reference:
http://books.google.it/books?id=Dlkw3id ... t&resnum=8

http://www.diocesilucca.it/parrocchie.p ... hie&id=303

I hope this is helpful for your search...

Rose,

I believe this should be a return from a trip to Italy of Giuseppe / Joseph Morelli... the date is May 27, 1914. He's returning to his home in Albuquerque, he's single, and he states Moriano as last residence in Italy and place of birth...
He's leaving his uncle Carlo Rondina in Barga (Lucca)

page 1:
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0027

page 2:
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0027

Lucca has several Fractions named with Moriano:

http://italia.indettaglio.it/ita/toscana/lucca.html

among them there is also Sesto di Moriano

Laura,

Thank you very much for the information. The first links you gave me, with Amabile and her two children, Teolindo and Annunziata, are my relatives (Great Grandmother, Uncle and Grandmother). I called my mother and she knew they came through Ellis Island, but didnt know much more than that (her mother died when she was very little). As for your other links, I assume they are accurate but will not be able to confirm them until I make a few phone calls. All in all, I greatly appreciate you sending me this information.

How were you able to retrieve this info so fast? You must belong to some search site. I now belong to Ancestry.com but they didnt show this manifest. If you dont mind me asking, what are you using for your search engine and where do you recommend that I look next or where should I go from here?

Hi Russ,
I'm really glad to help...
I was waiting for your confirmation or not to these records because I found others (very interesting :!: ) that I'll try to post for you later... (I'm italian and here is dinner time  )
I found the arrival manifest on http://www.ellisisland.org/ and the census on Ancestry.com.

Russ,

you can find Amabile's 1904 arrival on http://www.ellisisland.org/ under the name:

Morelli Oimabile

and on the Ancestry.com site under:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Onnabile Morelli
Name: Onnabile Morelli
Arrival Date: 4 May 1904
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1851
Age: 53
Gender: Female
Port of Departure: Genoa, Italy
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian
Ship Name: Prinzess Irene
Search Ship Database: Search the Prinzess Irene in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Line: 1
Microfilm Serial: 15
Microfilm Roll: T715_454
Page Number: 11

Basing on the 1910 census I believe I found also John/Giovanni's arrival on 1898:
Pink67 wrote:John Morelli 28 son, born in IT, single, year of immigr. 1895
Giovanni Morelli's first arrival in 1898:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Giovanni Woreth
Name: Giovanni Woreth
Arrival Date: 7 Jul 1898
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1882
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Genoa, Italy

Ship Name: Kaiser Wilhelm II
Search Ship Database: Search the Kaiser Wilhelm II in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Line: 14
Microfilm Serial: 15
Microfilm Roll: T715_25
Page Number: 267

As you have the subscription to the Ancestry.com site I don't post here the image, however, he was travelling alone, coming from Ponte a Moriano (Lucca - Tuscany) and was joining his brother August, in Albuquerque - New Mexico. :!:

So, I searched also the 1900 census for Albuquerque, to see if Giovanni was there and found this record (interesting)

From Ancestry.com:

1900 United States Federal Census
about Giovanni Morelli
Name: Giovanni Morelli
Home in 1900: Albuquerque, Bernalillo, New Mexico
Age: 17
Birth Date: Mar 1883
Birthplace: Italy
Race: White
Ethnicity: American
Gender: Male
Immigration Year: 1897
Relationship to head-of-house: Brother
Father's Birthplace: Italy
Mother's Birthplace: Italy
Marital Status: Single
Residence : Albuquerque City (Part), Bernalillo, New Mexico Territory
Occupation: View on Image
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Amaroco Morelli (right spell Americo) 30 head, born in IT, year of immigr. 1896, occupation Taylor
Ida Morelli 26 wife, born in IT, year of immigr. 1896
Italo Morelli 7 son, born in IT, year of immigr. 1896
Renato Morelli 6 son, born in IT, year of immigr. 1896
Lillie Morelli 1 daughter, born in NM
Marie Morelli 1/12 daughter, born in NM
Giovanni Morelli 17 brother, born in IT (march 1883), year of immigr. 1897, occupation Taylor

Do you think it was possible that there were other sons for Amabile?

This is Americo and Agostino Morelli arrival on 1896:

From Ellisisland.org

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0672

occupation Taylors, going to Albuquerque... :!:

What do you think about these records?
I hope I'm not making confusion for you... :)

Amabile listed her last residence in Italy as SESTO.
It could be Sesto Fiorentino, which is in the province of Firenze and just on the outskirts of Firenze. I lived in Sesto a few years ago.

Hi Trevisan....

I know there is also Sesto Fiorentino, but as the other records of this family where concerning the area in the surround of Lucca I believe that Sesto should be Sesto a Moriano... mopre than one sons stated Moriano as place of birth or last residence... :)

Russ,
these are the Morelli's present on the Ancestry.com database:

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918

living in New Mexico at that time....

Name Birth Date Race Birthplace Registration Place (City, County, State)

Lawrence I Morelli 13 Jul 1894 Caucasian (White) Italy Bernalillo, NM

Agostino Morelli 29 Mar 1874 White Bernalillo, NM

Antonio Morelli 3 Oct 1880 White Bernalillo, NM

John Morelli 16 Mar 1882 White Bernalillo, NM

Joseph Peter Morelli 30 Dec 1883 White Bernalillo, NM

unfortunately on these documents them all stated Italy as place of birth... but as both all the hamlets named with Moriano are included in the Lucca Comune and from these lasts documents you can know approx. their birth dates, why don't try to search for their birth acts in the Mormons Microfilms?
I don't know if you're familiar with the Family History Centers, but I noticed they filmed the Civil registrations of the Comune di Lucca:

Title Registri dello stato civile, 1866-1935
Authors Lucca (Lucca). Ufficio dello stato civile (Main Author)

Here is the link to their microfilms about Lucca:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... umns=*,0,0

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... umns=*,0,0

this is the link to find your nearest family history center:

I really hope this help you!

Thank you everyone who has given me an input. I greatly appreciate the help. All of these are great leads and I will try to sort them out. As for the research the LDS records, no I have not been there yet and therefore don't really know how to do it. I will check it out and see where it takes me. Can anyone research there records or do you have to be a member of their church to get full access?

Hello Russ!
The centers are for everyone. They’re usually staffed with very helpful folks.
Laura asked me to dig up a short write up I keep on file about the Family History Center for you.

You’ll want to find your nearest center first. Give them a call to check out their hours. You may want to mention that this will be your first trip and ask when the best time to visit would be since you’ll need some help.

Laura has listed the microfilms available - you may want to print the information out to take with you.
The cost is about $6 mo (rent), you’ll need to go to the center to order & view them.

Hope this helps!
