ACIERNO from Baiano, Avellino, Italy

Post by taxi55 »

Hello!

I would welcome any information on the Acierno surname and even better if I could get guidance on how to trace Guiseppe Acierno's family roots in Baiano. I do not have much to work since relatives are deceased, so please have patience with this newbie:. (I would also love to trace Jennie Acierno's ancestors however, I do not have her maiden name so I am not sure if this is possible.)

Guiseppe (1865 - 1948) born in Baiano
wife: Jennie (1863 - 1945) born in Baiano

They immigrated to the US in 1908 with their four children and settle first in New York City (Mulberry Street) and then in Brooklyn, NY. At the time of their immigration their children's ages were:

Amelia (1892)
Anunziata "Nancy" (1893)
Guiseppe "Joseph" (1897)
Giovanni "John" (1901)

I remember listening to John Acierno when I was just a few years old about how he continued to donate to the local church in Baiano for many years after he moved to New York. Is there a way to possibly check with local churches for "Acierno" information?

Is it even possible to think that with such little information I would be able to find out more about my Acierno relatives from Baiano?

I appreciate any guidance. Thanks so much!

For all the Mom's out there: HAPPY MOTHER's DAY!!!

Hello!
If these are your 1908 manifests, Giuseppe Acierno made at least two trips to the US.
Jennie's maiden name was Napolitano.
In Italy women keep their father's surname, so it wouldn't have been unusual for her to travel under her maiden name.
It appears that Jennie & the children were born in Avella
Since Italian records are kept at the comune (town) level it's important to know the exact town where everyone was born/married.
Marriages are usually recorded in the bride's comune.
Do you have your family's US records?
Sometimes US records contain clues that make the search in Italian records easier - especially exact birth dates :D

WOW ... Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge Valarie!!!

I have a lot to learn - there is so much out there. I visited some of the links you provided and was able to find the marriages of Joseph and Jennie's children (and the married names for the females.) Very cool.

Also utilized the NYC Death Records however, I couldn't find any that matched Joseph or Jennie's age/birth year. I was always told they died in New York, but I guess I will check NJ now - strange. From all the sources you provided, is there one in the US that is best for providing birth dates for Joseph and Jennie to make researching Italian records easier?

I'll go through the rest of the info you provided to map out a plan to further research Joseph and Jennie and visit the closest FHC as well. Hope researching becomes easier as I learn. :)

Thanks again - you've been great. Have a good one!

Hello Sophia :D !

I'm so glad we could help.
We can help with your census & military records (on subscription sites), but I'm not sure where
we'll find Joseph and Jennie's death certificates if they're not in NY...

Here are two neat sites for where to find death records and naturalization records by state:
http://www.deathindexes.com/
http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/naturalization.html

and this is a wonderful site with some neat records for other states

Sophia, I think I would write to both Baiano & Avella and request Joseph & Jennie's marriage record (act)
Besides having some wonderful information, including their parents, it will list their ages.

Hi!

Good catch! I just started researching "Napolitano" a couple of days ago, so once I write to Avella, I will have more info to share. It does appear that there are a number of common items like you pointed out: the Napolitano name, the Mulberry address, the town in Italy, Avella; the time period where they immigrated. I can't wait to find out more.

I also want to obtain Jennie Napolitano's husband's (Joseph Acierno) Naturilization paperwork for more info, so I still have lots to gather.

I am surprised that you received the birth registrations from Avella so quickly. That's good to know. Just so I understand correctly - did you send money at the time of your request?

What a kick that would be if we find out we are related! (Although with Italians - we're all related.) :)

I'll keep in touch! Do the same if you find out additional info on Jennie Napolitano from Avella...

hi again,
Avella didnt ask for any money, I offered and they did it all for free, the birth registrations are pretty generic says the name and date, name of parents thats it, its better then nothing. I know my napolitano had relatives come over, he was born in 1869 your napolitano could very well be a sister..hmm what I would give for a picture. I have been puting my pieces together for 7 months, thru this site I figured out my grandfather and great grandparents all used different first names, It is pretty funny once you start on this journey its like an addiction cant stop. If you come up with anything will you keep me posted?
Thanks alot

Here is a great site to learn how to research Italian records. You can learn how to read the old Italian documents.

Hi Valarie,

It IS nice to have. And the 1920 is correct for Joe, Jennie and up to their child John. I am not sure who those other children are but could be relatives staying there? I know Joe and Jennie lived at that address because I have paperwork that confirms.

I have not had chance to review all the info you provided to me. Does someone's Naturalization paperwork provide any info into that person's past - DOB, parents, etc? If so, would I be able to start another post requesting that information if it is obtainable on-line?

Enjoy your day,
Sophia

Hi Sophia,

Some naturalization records are online.
I've looked but can't find Joseph's.
If the paperwork is after 1906 it will include birth date & location, ship info, wife's name & children names and birth info

I did see a couple of possibilities on this site:
http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/naturalization.html
in NY under Kings County (Brooklyn) Naturalization Index 1907-1924
It's difficult to tell if these are the correct records, there were several Giuseppe Acierno's living in NY.
