Searching Palombo/Valente from Detroit, MI

Post by adriana295 »

Hi, I have started looking into my family heritage and am looking for possible relations/links to my great grandfathers family (on maternal and paternal sides)

My great grandfather (maternal) was Crecenzo Palombo and I have managed to find his birth (born Phili, PA) and death certificate (Detroit, MI) although it stops there. I know he was living in Detroit with his parents Nunzio Palombo and Benedetta Panetta and that he had a sister. This is where the information stops as he died in the States while his wife and children remained in Italy.

My other great grandfather is a little more of a mystery. His name was Pasquale Valente and lived in Detroit with his two sons Loreto (Larry) and Luciano. I know Luciano had a Deli/Store in Newark. NI and this is where the leads vanish. Larry died recently as far as I know and the information has stopped due to all the older generations in my family passing away. I know Pasquale died in a railing accident in the 1920's although I can't seem to find any written record of his death.

Does anyone know anything or know where I can get information as I would love to get the information complete and I'm hoping someone who is related in some way may also be looking for information :)

Thanks in Advance.

Hi I can hardly read that :)
I will have a look.
I know Crescenzo born 1890 died Sept 1920 so I was able to find his certificate online.

I cant seem to find his grave stone though :(

As for Pasquale I think I found his Ellis Island Manifest which would have him born about 1876, he would have been about 40 in the 1920s and his sons about 20/18

As far as I know they all lived on "Russell" Street but I do get the feeling that it will be a common italian immigrant street.

Hi!
I'm surprised how tough your Palombo & Valente families are to find in Detroit.
Which generation immigrated?
Have you been able to place either family on a census?
What was Pasquale Valente's wife's name?
Thanks!

I know!!! Pasquales wife was Giuseppa Loreta Pacitti but she remained in Italy until she died.

We alwys thought my great grandfather emigrated to work then discovered on my granmothers fathers birthcertificate that he was born in Phili meaning his family in the late 1800's must have been living and working in the USA!!!

I cant find either on the censuses but i'm finding it hard to find a good census. The only reason I know their address is I found Luciano's ship manifest and it gives his fathers address in Detroit.

Luciano had a Deli in Newark (which i didnt even know there was one in MI!) and Loreto only died a few years ago (his wife was Angela as far as I know!)

I have Crescenzos Death Certificate ( He had only been in Detroit from what I can see for 8 months prior to his death i.e. Feb 1920 which would make sense as my gran was born Jan 1920)

http://haldigitalcollections.cdmhost.co ... PTR=476057

and I know Pasquale died in the late 1920s

Im wondering if bad translations are effecting searches as they have not written Crescenzos fathers name correctly on his type version of his certificate, from what I can make out its Nunzio which would make sense as my great aunt was Annunziata.

Palombo

The death certificate for Crescenzo Palombo is a big help.
Can't find a WWI Draft Registration Card with that birth date though 11 Nov 1890.
Was the informant on the death certificate Joseph Palombo a relative?
Buried in Mt Olivet cemetery in Detroit
You may be able to write to them:

Thanks! The writing is hard to read at times. We dont know who this Joseph Palombo is, I phoned my uncle in Italy to ask him and he assumes it will be a cousin.

I thought that said Mr Oliver! haha.... not Mt Olivet, I'm going to look now!

I have a lot of information for the Valente/my grandfathers side as we found a full family tree back to the 1700's! but its not for my maternal grandmother only my mums dads family.

I'm assuming it would be a big assumption to think they were all buried in the same place?

Would the cemetry be able to give me related family members buried in the same area?

If they are nice folks, they can be a huge help.
At the least you'll want to know about Crescenzo and who owned/owns the gravesite & if they owned any others.
I hope you get someone who can help!

I emailed asking them (added a pathetic tone to my email) asking for his gravesite and if possible who was also buried/registered along with him, I'm hoping I can get his sisters name as noone seems to know it apart from the fact she had a boarding house in Detroit, MI

thankyou so much for your help, is it possible to find the census online?

is it possible to find the census online?
Absolutely.
There are several free ones here:
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/rec ... 7819#start
Along with some other terrific databases.

All of the US census records are on ancestry. com (subscription)
I've been using ancestry to look in Phila & Detroit without success (so far)

It's pretty slow here on weekends, if we don't find anything :? , there should be more members to help look on Monday

Thankyou so much!
I'm on the ancestry.com also and am drawing blanks for all of them minus Loreto (my nonno's brother) who only died in 2005.

I'm going to keep looking more and more names are popping up.

I'm not sure if you can see a family tree on ancestry but mine is on there and is rather far back for one part of my family.

You're right Loreto's SSDI, Naturalization Index Card & 1936 manifest are pretty easy to find on ancestry.
Name: Loreto Valente
Date of Birth: Wednesday May 15, 1918
Date of Death: Thursday November 03, 2005
Est. Age at death: 87 years, 5 months, 19 days
City: Taylor
County: Wayne
State: Michigan
ZIP Code: 48180
I looked for an obituary without success.
