looking for info on schifano-cacciatore from palermo!!

Post by kyliekya »

Hi!! I am looking for more information on my great grandparents from Palermo, Sicily. Here is what I know: my great grandmother was Ida Schifano (possibly a nun in her younger years), married my great grandfather, Anthony Cacciatore (he was a shoe maker). Together they had 15 children one being my grandfather Joseph angelo cacciatore..some of the other children's names were charley, mary, jean, larry, sal, johnny, franky, lina, gracey and louis is the ones my aunt could remember. They moved to New York when my grandfather was a young boy (he was born Feb. 19, 1915) so it might have been in the 1920's. They were registered when they came to New york. Sal and Louis possibly changed their names to Hunter. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could give on me finding out more information on Ida Schifano or Anthony Cacciatore, to see if I still have any living relatives. Thanks!!

Thank you sooo much!! I knew my Papa very well (that's the joseph angelo cacciatore in the obituary)...but I know nothing of his family..thank you so much. You have brought tears of joy to my eyes. Now I can try to find more about my great grandmother and great grandfather. (And it's ironic they came in on the Dante Alighieri, the divine comedy is my favorite)..thanks again.

I do have another question..I'd hate to be a bother since you've helped me so much already...but after i got this info from you..I've strated doing some research myself and could not find anything on Carmela Cartieri as Agata Schifano's mother..but I did find a husband and wife named Calogero Schifano and a Francesca Pollaci (or Pollari) whom had 2 children Agata Schifano born on Jan 8, 1859 in Licata Agrigento, Italy as well as a son named Angelo Schifano born Feb 27, 1864...could this be my great grandmother Agata? In the info you got on Agata, it showed she had a brother named Angelo Schifano..what are the chances?
And how would I go about finding out my Grandpa Joseph Angelo Cacciatore's granparents names (his father was Anthony or Antonio Cacciatore)? Thanks so much!!

It's possible that this is a relative of Agata's (she was born abt 1883)
If your family followed traditional naming patterns:
There has been a strong custom in Italy that determines how children are named:

- The first male is named after his paternal grandfather.
- The second male is named after his maternal grandfather.
- The first female is named after her paternal grandmother.
- The second female is named after her maternal grandmother.

Hello Kylie
I am Eda - your great Uncle Charlie's only child. Uncle Joe was a lovely man - and it has been many years since I saw my cousins...one of whom is obviously your parent. Are you Lynn, Robyn, Ronnie or Tammy's child?

I was actually named after your Great Grandma whose real name was Agata Aida Schifano - but her nickname was Ida pronounced with a long EE sound)...so my parents changed the I to an E....and another cousin - John's daughter was give the same name. I'm Eda Angela..she's Eda Lynn.

I can't help with the deep ancestry but I can confirm for you that they were indeed from Licata. Great Grandpa was well into his nineties when he passed away - but he was still in his eighties and still running a shoe repair shop. The did live in Racine Wisconsin when he was working for a restaurant chain called the Brass Rail....In fact my father was born there in 1919. Sadly, my Dad died this past July - also at age 91, after a great life.

A few other points....
Ida was married in Italy to another man by whom I know that she had at least one child - a son - Lawrence (his American name) Larusso. Uncle Larry lived here and had a son named Larry that was in the Navy at least for a time...I think they lived in California but not sure..

I believe Ida's first husband passed away and she then married my grandfather (the shoemaker) Antonio/Antonino Cacciatore. While still in Italy they had a son named Mario (who had a son named Antonino - deceased since 1994...I met them both on a trip there at age 12). Mario stayed behind in Italy - He was the only child that did, and I can only guess that he may have been in love...or he may have had some condition that would have forced him to be refused at Ellis Island, but I don't think he ever came here even for a visit.

Aunt Jean (Vincenza) was born there too. She lived in Florida in her later years and was married to Clyde Squires. She had one child Marie Squires Wilhelm who had 6 kids (George -who was my age-, MaryEllen, Robert, Tina, John and Paul) and later married a man named Charles Gerts (or Gertz).

Uncle Louis did change his name to Hunter. I think he lived in New Mexico and I only met him on a few rare occasions.

Uncle Sal kept the name Cacciatore. He and Aunt Marie had two kids - John and Madonna and they lived in Irving, Texas.

I believe Aunt Mary in Arizona, and Uncle Frank here in New York are the only surviving children. Uncle Frank's lost his wife last year but as far as I know he is still working part time at a school cafeteria - as he loves kids - and living part time with his daughter Maryann Wieczorek in Northport and part time with his son Anthony (during the school year). I will be calling Maryann this week and will share that I encountered your postings when I looked up our grandmother. I'd been trying to figure out what year she passed away and how old I was. I can only tell you that I remember her sitting straight up, proud and and firm in her home hospital bed in spite of what I believe was either stomach or colon cancer that took her life soon after. She, Nonnu and Aunt Mary and Aunt Lena and their families lived as long as I can remember in a large house in Flushing that had three separate family units until she passed away.

By the way - You are right about the brother Angelo Schifano...There was an Uncle Joe (him) after whon your grandfather was named - but only after my father was changed form a Joseph to a Charie because some Uncle Calogero came t town and there wasn't a child named after him!!!

That's all I've got for now.

Best
Eda

Hello,
My name is Virginia LaRusse, I am Lawrence LaRusse's Daughter.
I'm trying to find information about my father's real Father, Salvatore LaRussa. I find a lot of information about the Cacciatore's but none on the LaRusse's. The Cacciatore's were dad's half brothers and sisters.
my email is : vmlarusse@yahoo.com
If anyone has any information, please email me.
or if you need any information about the family that I can help with.
Thank you,
Virginia
P.s. LaRussa was changed to LaRusse when Daddy came to the USA from Sicily.
