Imbalance in parental DNA matches on Ancestry..?

Genetic genealogy is the application of genetics to traditional genealogy. Genetic genealogy involves the use of genealogical DNA testing to determine the level and type of the genetic relationship between individuals.

I haven't had any DNA testing so I did a (exact) surname search on Ancestry.com for myself.

The results were: maternal surname (non-Italian) 110 times more records than paternal surname (Italian). Your differential in DNA matches is about 40x.

It's not very scientific - and you'd want to expand the surname searches along your family tree (e.g., using surnames of all 8 great-grandparents) - but I'd expect this record discrepancy to be reflected in DNA matches, disproportionate on my maternal side.

I had a problem using my grandmothers' surnames because of alternate spellings.

I suppose you could add geographic filters in surname searches.

I've tried that to some extent -- Paternal side has spelling variances, but other surnames on the paternal side are quite common. Where my confusion (or disbelief) enters in is that I should have more US-based matches than I do. I also don't have many maternal surnames in any of the trees from those matches. I only just had the 2nd match with my grandfather's surname in their tree recently, with no direct connection. It's all very frustrating...

I hope you get more replies from members with DNA testing experiences, as that would be the most useful information.

How would illegitimate births and/or surname changes affect DNA matching results?

Did Italians ever use "dit" names like the French?

You could add chimerism to this list:

Illegitimacies/adoptions shouldn't matter to DNA. After all, I found an illegitimate cousin through DNA that I NEVER could have discovered through paper trail...

I wouldn't be so confused if the discrepancy wasn't so stupidly tilted (now over 26k)...
