I am trying to find the ship manifest for my GG Grand Mother, Maria Feminella. She came to the US in 1885 from Italy, probably Sassano, at the age of 50 according to the 1910 census.
I have searched Ancestry and WorldVitalRecords.com and nothing. I don't know how you do it, but my friends at ItalianFeneology.com always seem to find what I am looking for.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jim
Searching for Maria Feminella
Re: Searching for Maria Feminella
Hello Jim,
Is Feminella her maiden name?
Could she have travelled with anyone else?
Who was she living with in 1910?
Thank you, Valarie

Hi Valarie
It's too bad that the early manifests hold so little information...

Re: Searching for Maria Feminella
Hi T !
You're right, it's so rare that an early manifest will have any information that will help confirm who these folks were .

Re: Searching for Maria Feminella
Maria's married name is Feminella. According to the 1910 census, she came here in 1885 when she was 50 years old and a widow. She settled in Elizabeth, NJ, near her son who came in 1883.
She was 75 in 1910, and does not appear in the 1920 census, so I have to believe that she died somewhere in between.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Searching for Maria Feminella
Jim thank you for the clarification
It's likely that she travelled under her maiden name unless she travelled with her husband.
In Italy women keep their maiden names.
You may need to order her death certificate if you don't already know her maiden name.

for reference, your 1910 census

Re: Searching for Maria Feminella
Hey Jim,
Just found this site caught my eye instantly. My Grandmother was Maria Calandriello Feminella b Sala Consilina 6-5-1893 d 5-29-1989.
I can say with 99% certainty your grandmother was from the Sassano area, and we are probaly related somewhere down the line. My Great Granfather was Cono Feminella (1 of thousands), b 1842 in Sassano, my Grandfather Giovanni (1 of several thousands) Feminella b 5-14 1882 Sassano, imagrated to U.S. 1907, 1908 back to Italy, then again 1913 to Chicago, d 2-7-43. They were required to travel under their maiden names, if they were not travelling with their husbands. You might try this, spell Feminella with a double mm (Femminella) it my bring some more info.
Good Luck!
