Immigration BACK to Italy??

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Immigration BACK to Italy??

Post by amerital43 »

I'd like to know if there is any way of checking on immigration OUT OF America and back INTO Italy?
I had heard stories that my Grandfather's brother came here but didn't stay. I found the Ellis Island Manifest stating my Great Uncle came here Jan. 21, 1921, contact was my GF, but there is no indication that he remained here. This was his second visit.
My G. Uncle was Gaetano Liantonio, his wife, back in Italy, was Giovanna Pellegrino. He would have went back to Palo de Colle, Bari.
Any information is appreciated.

No records of outbound passengers, only incoming. If a naturalized citizen you can locate passport records.

Thank you for answering.
Well I kind of expected nothing going out from the USA but what about INTO Italy? Did they also keep records?

This is just a long shot. Try the phone book:

I would call people with the same last name in that town. I am making the assumption that they had children back in Italy.
Since he was always Italian, it wasn't a big deal to go back. I believe a lot of people came back to Italy! Interesting question, good luck!

Thank you Corrado, for your answer. That's a lot of people to go through and I'll consider it. I suppose I should also think about the Pellgrinos, too.
Does Italy make/keep records of incoming people today? Do you know what year they might have started doing that?
Thanks to any who answer!

Perhaps contacting the Ufficio Anagrafe (census/registry) for the town may have a record of absences and returns to the town as a resident.

You might wish to modify the letter to suit your needs. =Peter=

I have asked this question on other forums and apparently there is no record here in the US. I will check some of the suggestions above. Thank you!
