Need help finding arrival info - Palmigiano

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Need help finding arrival info - Palmigiano

Post by gemellua »

Helping a friend find info on their Palmigiano family from Palermo.

I have found the 1906 Ellis Island arrival info for their ggrandparents Antonino and Giuseppa and her grandmother Giuseppa. My friend cannot confirm the maiden name of her ggrandmother. Looking at the record, I am guessing her ggrandmother Giuseppa, may have married her cousin Antonino, or Ellis Island did not record her maiden name properly. I know I'll have to check the Palermo records to solve this.

My question however is the following:
They state they are coming to Brooklyn, NY to stay with their son Tomaso. I cannot find a Tomaso arriving in the USA. My friend cannot confirm this person, since they do not know much about the siblings of their grandparents.

Any help would be appreciated.

You say you have located the arrival manifest in 1907?
Can you post a link to it, or the image itself?

EDIT TO ADD:
Here is the manifest you referenced...

Italian women travel under their maiden name. If the name was the same as her husband's, that could mean they are related, but it may be several grades (like a 3rd or 4th cousin).

This is generally true but there were a couple of exceptions. If a woman had lived in the US for a while and then made a trip back to Italy, it's not unusual to see her return to the US under her husband's surname, especially a couple of decades into the 20th c. Also, sometimes you'll see a woman's husband's surname written above her maiden name, even with the maiden name crossed out, and in this case she may be indexed under her husband's surname.

Neither of these scenarios appear to be the case here, though.

Thank you very much Marcello for the extra information! Does anyone have an arrival manifest for Tommaso? I've tried the different surname spelling combos, but still cannot find him.
