List of people leaving Italy circa 1880

List of people leaving Italy circa 1880

Post by garrysdad »

Hello

Is there a source for the names of people who left Italy around 1881 ? My great grandfather and his brother left Sant'Elia Fiumerapido in then but I don't know if they intended to land on the West coast of Scotland or if they were bound for New York ?

I am not aware of such a list, but if you provide us with names and dates of birth maybe we can help in the search.

The names of the 2 brothers were Antonio La Marra and Nicola La Marra. They arrived in Scotland around 1881 initially. Antonio lost his first 2 wives and so made the trip on 3 occasions. Antonio was born in Sant'Elia on 19 February 1855 whilst Nicola was born in Sant'Elia on 28 October 1861.

Is this the family of your Antonio La Marra in the 1891 Scotland Census?
This would have been some months before the birth of Giuseppe in the record above.
With no image available, it is difficult to determine who "Giuseppe De Stefano" is in the record.

If you're looking in Scotland, and have a good idea of name, dates and locations, checkout ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk. They have indexed records for both Scottish civil records and the Old Parish Records (OPR) used prior to 1854. (Note: OPR refers to Church of Scotland - the Presbyterian Church.)

Note: It's not a free site. You buy credits, then each search is 1 credit, and most record views are generally 5 credits. (30 credits cost 7GBP.) As an enticement to register, they let you do a surname search on the main page.
I searched Lamarra from 1840-90, and got several hits:
Statutory Register Births 1855 - 1890: 9 matches
Statutory Register Deaths 1855 - 1890: 3 matches
Catholic Parish Records Births & Baptisms 1840 - 1890: 4 matches
Valuation Rolls 1885: 2 matches

As peonygirl said, genealogy searches in Scotland are almost like cheating. :)
It's tempting....

Thanks to both Tessa78 and to Ken for taking the trouble to reply to my query. I have been very active on Scotlandspeople and with the LDS microfilms and so have discovered your information already. I am still curious about the two young Italians landing on the West Coast of Scotland !
