Does 1992 reinstatement allow post-naturalization bloodline?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Does 1992 reinstatement allow post-naturalization bloodline?

Post by MarkAlosi »

Hey there,

I'm trying to claim citizenship on the following bloodline: Grandmother>Father> Me

My grandmother (born in Italy to Italian parents, 1923) was naturalized in the US in 1953, and my father was born in 1958. That would seem to rule me out, but I discovered my grandmother reclaimed her citizenship in 1992 and maintained an Italian passport until her death.

Does the 1992 reinstatement mean that on paper she maintained citizenship at the time of my fathers birth? Am I eligible?

Thanks!

No, your father was never Italian because he was born after his mother naturalized and when she reclaimed her Italian citizenship in 1992, your father was no longer a minor so Italian citizenship also did not pass to him at that time. You are not eligible.
