Just Wondering
When new immigrants arrived at Ellis Island, they indicated to immigration authorities, who recorded the information for the official Ellis Island record, the person and place in America that they were traveling to. However, they often did not speak the language, had no cell phones (and usually most families in america had no house phones in the early 1900s), nor knew how to get to the locations of the relatives that they planned to meet and likely stay with for a while. So how did they manage to get to the family in America that they planned to stay with?

Use the imagination...
Re: Just Wondering
Ah, but they did have letters, so relatives knew when their loved ones were traveling and on what ships. The immigrants had names and addresses so if their relatives were not there to meet them, I’m sure there were many enterprising people who would take them where they needed to go (for a fee).
These immigrants were for the most part uneducated and illiterate. But these were no shrinking violets. They endured long, uncomfortable journeys to a strange country thousands of miles from their homes with strange customs and a strange language. They would find a way.

it is sad that this fine website has been infiltrated by people who falsely think that they are comedians and obviously have little interest in promoting Genealogy work.
