Ship Manifests

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Ship Manifests

Were the ship manifests written upon departure by Italians in Italy or upon arrival by Americans in the US? What about booking lists?

Manifests for US bound Italian emigrants were prepared by the shipping companies at the port of departure. Not sure what you mean by booking lists.

Did the shipping companies use local Italians or American employees?

I was wondering why the errors in the spelling of names, etc. if native Italians are filling out the ship manifests.
