In 1920, why would a poor 17-year old from Sicily depart for the US from Cherbourg, France?

Possibly they originally left Sicily by way of Palermo but the ship had issues and had to re-dock. Could be the manifests were updated and the old ones possibly lost. Remote, but a explanation nonetheless...
