the Italian Emigrant Swindle of 1872

Post by joetucciarone »

Anyone interested in the history of Italian emigration to the United States should read the front-page story “Emigrants’ Wrongs,” published on November 22, 1872 in the New York Tribune. The following link opens the article, which is at the top right corner of the page where the keyword “Wrongs” is highlighted in red:

The Tribune story was the first report of a cruel swindle which, unknown at the time, would trigger the mass migration of Italians to America in the last quarter of the 19th century.
