Finding my grandfather's birth certificate

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Finding my grandfather's birth certificate

Post by ppenna »

I'm trying to find records of my grandfather's birth certificate in order to possibly gain dual citizenship ship, but also to give a copy to my father as a gift.

Name: Bruno Penna
DOB: January 21st 1905
Birthplace: Polia, Calabria

Any help is appreciated!

Warm regards,
Paul

Hi Paul - Have you seen this? It isn't a birth record, but it shows the September 3, 1927 arrival at Niagara Falls of an Italian named Bruno Penna who was born in Polia in 1906. The document states he arrived by rowboat:

Two pages later in the same manifest book is this record of the Niagara Falls arrival of another Bruno Penna. This one was born in "Palea, Catanzaro":

This Bruno Penna appears on the following page in another Niagara Falls arrival:

You will need to write to the town for records after 1861

There is a standard form for the request, which is helpful if you have at least some of the basic data on the birth. (Date and parents.) I'm hopeful that your comune there is responsive. I was fortunate to get a response in about 48 hours. Some are quite a bit slower.
