I need help with finding a birth certificate.

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

I need help with finding a birth certificate.

Post by Lorox7 »

Hey everyone,

I'm about to start the paperwork to becoming an Italian citizen and I need the birth certificate of my greatgrandfather, who is the one that's Italian.
My grandma (the Italian man's daughter) doesn't really know the exact birth date, all we know is that he died when he was 87 in 1969, so he was born in 1882, in Salerno. I'm also unaware of his parent's names. His name is Rafael Angrisani Gomez. I've been told that the last name Angrisani is very common in the region of Campania, which makes it even harder.
I don't really know where to start and I'd appreciate if other people could guide me through.

Thanks in advance people!

If you can provide more detail it will help to track down the family and locate the manifest, as well as other records which may or may not reveal the parents name. You could send for a birth record to the town of origin without the name of parents....but is it going to be the right birth record??

Where did he live once in the US? Name of wife? Children? Any and all details will help....

Before you go through all this trouble, you need to answer one question. You would be applying through your great grandfather, then your grandmother, and then your grandmother's child (your mother or your father). When was your father (or mother) born? If before 1948, you would not be eligible, because of a law that prohibited a woman from passing on citizenship before that date.

Hey, thank you all for the answers, sorry I didn't reply sooner.

OK, first of all, I'm not American so he never got to any city and the manifest you provided me with isn't gonna be helpful, however, I can maybe track down the manifest from where I come from (Uruguay). He got married in Argentina and not in Italy, i don't know if that will be helpful, as far as Italy is concerned he never got married.

Secondly, my mom's the one passing the citizenship to me, but she was born in 1966.

Now, how important is this manifest thing? And how is it gonna help me get the birth certificate?

The manifest would only help you if it provides information on his birth date and location. Best to speak to your grandmother again. She may not know the exact birth date, but she may be able to give you an approximation that will help you begin your search. There are several services that can help you. I obtained my grandfather's certificate through www.myitaliancitizenship.com However, I did know the date and place of birth.

The rules in S. America are not likely different from those pertaining to the U.S. Just be sure that your g-grandfather did not naturalize before your grandmother's birth. The naturalization date is of particular importance to the consulates.

Hi Lorex7,

Have you obtained his marriage record from Argentina? His death record? These may provide parents names & birth location.

Research outline for Argentina>

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... entina.asp

An immigration to Argentina site (have to register but it's free)>

http://www.italians-world.org/Italy/BancaDatiGb.htm

And this may help to obtain his marriage record>

http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/argentina.html#A1

Hope this helps & please keep us posted.....maybe able to help more with next step.

OK, thanks guys, I couldn't find anything in the immigration site.
I already have the death certificate cuz he died in Uruguay and i could get it.
Concerning the marriage, he got married in Argentina, then divorced and got married in Uruguay, which marriage record should i be looking for?

I know the birth location and the birth date, which are Salerno and July 11th 1882.

Is that the city of Salerno or the province of Salerno?.....If you can get his parents' names from one of his marriage records, you can contact the province archives and/or the town for his birth act.

The city of Salerno that is, sorry.
Anyway, will the parents' names be in the marriage certificate? Even if they stayed in Italy?

Lorox7. you request the birthact of your ancestor, and in the birthact are also the marriage note, so you can descover more, because many italian emigrants given the data for the registration in the italian civil records registry... suanj
