birth certificate unavailable?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

birth certificate unavailable?

Post by dannyjosa »

Hi there,
My Italian ancestor was born 1851 in Rome, but Rome seems not to keep records pre-1870 and the Church isn't able to help.

Does anyone know what I can do in this instance? Is there any way to proceed?

Thanks all!

Most of baptismal registrations in Roma are kept at the diocesan archive.
But, as there are a lot of parishes, you have to know what church your ancestor was baptized in, or at least where his parents lived.
There might another way to know that, if he married in Italy after 1870, through his marriage "allegati".

Thanks! The Archivio di Stato had his birth confirmation on the military draft register, do you think this would be adequate if there is no baptism certificate? The Vatican is unwilling to supply me his baptism certificate as it is “in need of restoration “, so i am seeking a workaround . Thanks

As far as I know, it should be possible to provide military records.
The issue is, will the Consulate (if you are applying through it) accept them?
If they don't, I think you will have to go through a lawyer in Italy.

Well, I don't know, as a lawyer has to evaluate the case and see exactly what is necessary.
However, I've sent you a PM.
