Nuclo/Nugolo Castellammare di stabia

Post by dnuclo »

Looking for any information on the Nugolo family (changed to Nuclo when immagrated to New York then to Connecticut in 1880's). My husband's great grandfather Felig Edward Nugolo was born in Castellammare di Stabia. His parents gave him to the local orphanage because they could not raise him. Apparently, the last name came from the person that ran the orphanage at that time (which was customary). We do not know his birth name. He was married to Cristina. When they came to America, they settled in New Haven Connecticut. I am trying to find the orphanage, and anything with the Nugolo last name. Hitting brick walls. Any help appreciated....Debbie

Yes, you are both correct. This is indeed the same family. After I posted this, I found more information. The children's names are correct plus a few more that were born after the 1910 census. The oldest daughter Marie made a booklet that was distributed to the entire family and it stated that the name was Nugolo. I guess with the language barrier, different people heard different names when told explainning the names Nucolo and Nucro. I did not realize that Savario (the father) had died by the 1920 census. Now that you have given me so much info for the US, my roadblock is trying to find out the original family that put Savario into the orphanage ( Annunzio)? in Castellamarre di Stabia. How would I go about getting the adoption information from Italy? Did they even keep any records at that time (1870's)?

Thanks so much to both of you for all the information, this is all so interesting!!

Did you find anything else? Saverio is correct and they came in 1906. John was my grandfather. I have the book that was mentioned that Marie made and also some of the documents from Italy.
