If you know his birth year then you can find him under Attino (there is a mispelled gaetano under Attino in the ellisisland,.org website easy enough since you can get the age by deducting his birth year from the arrival year when going thru the listing. =Peter=

I don't think those are him though as his census shows he arrived 1893.

The Attino's from Messina according to Ellis came in either 1909 (a female Gaetana) and the Giuseppa di Gaet'o Attino who came in 1897 (only 8 years old).

He can try D'attino, addino,

THere is a

First Name: Gaetano
Last Name: Addone
Ethnicity: Italian
Last Place of Residence:
Date of Arrival: Jun 21, 1893
Age at Arrival: 26y Gender: M Marital Status:
Ship of Travel: Chandernagor
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0316

use the link below and look at passenger 316

Justin,

Here is an interesting manifest. Dan mentioned it. It is for a Giuseppa di Gaetano Attino (male 8 years old) and a Pietro Patera (a female, his mother) I think this might be Petrina and her son. Did Gaetano have a son, Giuseppe? If this is the correct manifest, it tells you that Petrina's father was Giuseppe and he is deceased.

Send a letter in It5alian to the Distretto militare at Via Oberdan 33 Catania, Postale 95100 Sicily or an e-mail to cedoc_catania@esercito.difesa.it and request his Registro Di Leva since you do not know his town of origin but do have his name and approximate year of birth (should be circa 1872) in the province of Messina. =Peter=

Postscript: Sorry that the year of birth you indicated is 1860 so 1872 is not correct. =Peter=

Yes we have some additonal information for you. Sicilian is spoken in Italy as wellas Italian and Italian is used for most commercial, legal and social purposes.

There is no need for you to know Italian language since there are form letters which you can use to send to the Military archives I previously advised. Go to www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwisdom/saviello2.html and on page 4 of 5 pages at the bottom is dedicated to military records research by mail. =Peter=
