Thank you for the link on the towns/villages near Bellona. I just took a look at the SSN record again and it clearly says Villa Volturno. The date of birth matches as does his father's name so I am sure it is him........ it is strange though.
I hope another volunteer can shed some light on this.
I'm stumped.
I also noted while looking at ship manifests that married females seem to use their maiden name.......... is that typical? I noticed this most with my Italian lines...... not so much with my Dad's English lines.
Yes, in Italy women keep their father's surnames. Usually they wouldn't pick up their husband's name until they arrived in the US.
Most of the time you'll find women on manifests under their father's surname.
Sometimes if they travel with their husbands they'll be listed as 'wife' with no surname.
Children on manifests, if they travel with their mother, often have their father's surname listed or added later.

Another note on names
Not sure if you’re familiar with traditional Italian naming customs?
From this website:

There has been a strong custom in Italy that determines how children are named:
The first male is named after his paternal grandfather.
The second male is named after his maternal grandfather.
The first female is named after her paternal grandmother.
The second female is named after her maternal grandmother.
