What are my options in locating documents?

Post by TangoChaser »

Hello,

First I'd like to say this is a great site. I've read so many threads and seems everone is eager to help each other.
Here is my problem. (I'll give some personal info I shouldn't hoping it helps)

My Name is J. Robert Carosiello (I went by John as a child but my birth certificate shows only "J."
My fathers name was John Peter Carosiello. I was told he was born in Philadelphia PA and raised there. I was also told he was a "Jr." but he never used the "Jr." on anything. Supposedly his father "my grandfather" came from Italy.
I've checked the Ellis Island site and there is no matching name. There is Giovanni (John) but there are several.
My father died several years ago and I never met my grandparents. I had an Aunt Catherine in Philadelphia and she had three kids, Vincent, Richard and Anthony. I cant find them either.
I have my fathers SSDI info. I sent the the Pennsylvania Dept. of Vital Statistics for a copy of my fathers birth certificate and was told I could not get one. Something about homeland security and identity theft.

Where else can I go to look for information on my family? I've done google to death. My mother-in-law found something on geneology or ancestry dot com with the correct name. But its from the 1930 census. Which list (the would be grandfather) living in Ohio. But my father was born in PA in 1930.
I guess they could have moved after the census was taken but I'm finding that hard to believe. I never heard of any relative in Ohio, talk was always about South Philly, PA.

Suggestions of where totry next?
I appreciate any suggestions.

Facts I know:

FATHER:
Name: John Peter Carosiello
Place of Birth: Philadelphia, PA
Date of Birth: 14 December 1930
Date of Death: 08 January 2006
Place of Death: Vineland, NJ

AUNT:
Name: Catherine
Last know address: Philadelphia, PA
Children: Vincent, Richard & Anthony Born between 1965-1970

Other Info not guaranteed:
Father was a "Jr."
This would lead me to "assume" my grand father had the same name.
Grandfather came to US from Italy
Some confusion if from Italy or Sicily

Unfortunatly this is all the information I have. I know it's not much
Thanks for your reply.

if your father was born in December...he would not have appeared on the 1930 census. as they were taken in the spring and summer. I'll do some searching...as I'm sure others will too.

I think the 1930 data was to hint that was my grandfather. But I dont hold much water with that.

Something else I remember but doubt it is relevant:
My father told me a story when I was a kid
"When he was a teenager (15 i think) he joined the army under his brothers name. Which I think is Paul or maybe peter."
He was injured and that brother received compensation for the purple heart.

Then my father told me he went back in the Army for Korea under his own name. Agian receiving a purple heart.

I know for a fact he pulled a Veterans Compensation for Non-Connection disabiltiy.

I did call the VA when I found out he died. I gave them his ssn and name, date of birth and did varify that they "Stopped sending checks" but would not release any other info from his C-file. They wouldn't give me any birth or parent information.

I knew this site would be helpful. THANKS

The obit. is right on. I did find that a couple months ago on the papers archives. It didnt' list anything.

The WWI draft card is promising and the Peter J in WWII I believe is when my father entered with his name.
You pasted "Draft Card" is there an actual photo you got that from?

You've given me some great info and I thank you. And I'll check that link you just posted.
Now I just need to get an actual paper trail to link me to my father, then to his father.

If you have a copy of your birth cert. from the clerks office of the town/city you were born in, usually an uncertified copy is about $10 and a certified copy is about $30 (depending on municipality)...it should obviously have your father's name on it.

from there follow the link I gave you to get a copy of his SS registration form...they are nice people...it just sometimes takes a while...and you may have to call them if you don't receive anything...but once you get it...it will have his parents names listed, and where he was born and when and that...

also through that link is military registrations, that you can get copies of draft cards and such...

they have all the prices listed for the searches and copies as well.

possible ship manifest:

Arrival Date: 14 Apr 1922
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1897
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)

It almost scares me that all this information is out on the internet for anyone to find. Then again, I could'nt find any of it.

Thank you so very much.

If that is in deed my grandfather the Ellis Island log shows him as already married, in transit to visit a cousin.

I cant thank you enough for all this information.

While typing my first post, I felt there was no information that I could search towards and now I have all these options.
