Given Name "S'lerea" or "Nerea" - c

Post by JohnArmellino » 26 Jan 2009, 02:15

I found this given name in a record from 1733. The letters are quite clear, although the accent seems somewhat odd as written. Has anyone ever come across this name or something like it? I am looking for an Irene in that time period; could this name be some sort of variation of Irene?

If the accent is actually a downstroke, then the name might be Nerea. Has anyone come across this name?

Nerea (feminine) and Nereo (masculine) are given names although not very diffused. The origin is Greek, meaning great swimmer.
