Trying to find an immigration record

Post by JoeC »

Hi -

I'm trying to find an immigration record for Filippeo Costello. I believe he was born in Gagliano Castelserrato, Italy. According to the 1920 U.S. Census, where he is shown as Philip Costello, he was 55 years old, so he was born in 1865, and he immigrated in 1889.

Thanks for any help!

Hi JoeC,

Possible arrival manifest from Ancestry.com:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1864
Age: 26 6/12
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy and Gibraltar
Destination: New York
Place of Origin: Sicily
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian
Ship Name: Victoria
Search Ship Database: Search the Victoria in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York
Line: 47
Microfilm Serial: M237
Microfilm Roll: M237_559
List Number: 1727
Port Arrival State: New York

unfortunately his birth place is not listed, but he was coming from Sicily...

Do you know if he married in the U.S. or in Italy?

I believe that the correct spelling of the town where Filippo Costello was Born is Gagliano Castelferrato. You may find some basic info about the town at this link: http://en.comuni-italiani.it/086/010/

Laura: I think Filippeo was married prior to immigrating. The 1920 census shows him as a widower, so I don't know exactly how long he was married, but the census shows his oldest child as 30 years old, born in Italy and immigrating in 1890. I'm guessing he came over first, and then his wife and child followed?

Livio: You are correct about the misspelling of the town.

Thanks!

Laura: Thanks for the 1910 census information. That is definitely Filippo and his family. I don't have a subscription to Ancestry.com, so I would definitely appreciate it if you could post the image for me.

Biff: Thanks for the 1900 census information/image.

Seeing all three census records makes me wonder how to determine what is the "real" date for things such as immigration. For example, the 1920 census said 1889, 1910 said 1891 and 1900 said 1893. Is it safe to assume that since the 1900 census is closest to the possible time of immigration that it really is 1893?

Thanks again for all your help!

From the 1900 census image it seems the second daughter Angelina was born in New Jersey on November 1892, so possible the arrival was between 1890 and 1892...

Joe,

If the 1900 census information relative to birthplaces and birthdates is correct:

Daughter Josephina's birthdate in Italy is April 1891 and daughter Angelina's birthdate in New Jersey is Nov 1892.

They would have emigrated sometime in the interim months.
