SPADARO from Messina

Post by Soospad » 22 Mar 2009, 03:11

Hello! I'm hoping someone can help or offer suggestions on how we can trace our great-grandfather.

The only document we have showing a place of birth is his Petition for Naturalization which just says Messina, Italy. We're hoping he meant the city not the province!

His name was Joseph (Giuseppe) Spadaro and he was a tailor.

He was born on the 5th of January. His Petition for Naturalization says 1867, his death certificate says 1866, and on various census it's 1867, 68 and 69 - typical!

According to his Petition for Naturalization he came to the U.S. on the "SS Bolivia" which sailed from Naples and arrived in New York in November 1889. I couldn't find him on the passenger list but did find a G. Spadaro, tailor, on the SS Bolivia that sailed from Naples and arrived in NY in December 1891.

I have no idea how long he was in NY or whether he was married there or elsewhere. He married Margeurite Blancheri who came from Nice, France. Her brother, Antoine Blancheri, lived in NYC.

The next info I have for him is the 1900 census in San Fransisco showing him married for five years with a 4-year old son (our grand-uncle). They moved to Los Angeles where our grandfather was born.

We have no information on his parents or whether he had any siblings.

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help or offer suggestions.
