Help with Marco and Defillipi families

Post by mfpalmer »

Hello everyone,

I am trying to find any relatives of and the home village of my maternal great grandparents.

This is what I think I know:

My great grandfather, George (or Giorgio) Marco was born in or around Turin (Torino) about 1863 or 1864. He emmigrated to the U.S. in 1887 leaving from La Harve, France and arriving in NY. A few years later he invited a girl from his village, Maria Defillipi to come and marry him. She was born in 1869 and emmigrated to the U.S. in 1891 again leaving from La Harve. They were married in 1891 and one of the witnesses was Joseph Defillipi which I assume may be her brother.

My aunt remembers getting letters from cousins in Italy up until the beginning of WWII.

I realized this information is sketchy but any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Laura,

Yes, they did settle in Michigan first. Calumet, MI. That's where my grandfather and his siblings were born. They later moved to Western PA and then my grandfather moved to Oklahoma.

Suanj, Yes, I believe they might be from Lusiglie but not completely sure. It does match some of the facts though. Thanks.

Mark,

I want to point you (just in case you don't know them) just a few sites were I found several references to Marco and Defilippi coming from Piedmont region and settled in Houghton County areas...
Especially the De Filippi were coming from San Giusto Canavese and San Giorgio Canavese both in Torino Province... (Lusigliè, the town suggested by Suanj is only two miles far :!: )

You're welcome Mark! :D

Possible second arrival in the U.S. for Giuseppe/Joseph De Filippi??

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0026

year of birth 1862 (aprox) married, from San Giorgio [Canavese], joining his cousin Giovanni Velino? in Brooklyn. He stated he was in the U.S. before, 8 years, from 1885 to 1893 in Calumet :!:

Thanks, Laura. I found a marriage record for Joseph Defillipi in Calumet in 1897. That won't match with your dates, though. Mark

This is so strange. I've just become interested in my maternal grandfather. His name was Joseph DeFilippi (French); married to Maria Iavelli (Italian). He became a citizen in 1895 in Calumet, Michigan. They are in the 1910 census records. C & H mining in Calumet has records of DeFilippi's. I have several letters that my mother wrote to her mother in Calumet from the 30's and 40's - they are in Italian. I can send you copies! Let me know.

Now that's interesting! Do you know where in Italy Maria is from? I'd be interested in how to find the C&H mining records!
